Among the many brands during the Fashion Rhapsody 2013: The Shang Holiday Fashion Show, three of them have that classic look for both men and women. NO wonder TOPSHOP, Celine CLN and Debenhams have a brand history that stretches decades and in the case of Debenhams centuries.
Topshop and Debenhams are signature British brands while Celine originated from Paris, France. These are the trademarks whose clothes don’t easily go out of style. They also have branches worldwide.
I tried to collate the brief origins and designers involved with those brands together with my photos from the Shang Plaza fashion show I photographed. One interesting note is that the TOPSHOP presence in the Philippines is greater than the U.S. and Hong Kong.
The Shang Holiday fashion Show is annual fashion event held at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri La Plaza. Other brands that participated include: Arrow, A/X, Bauhaus, Bebe, Ben Sherman, Celine, Crossings Department Store, Daniel Hechter, Debenhams, Escada/Escada Sport, Gant, Gap, K&Co, Mango, Marks & Spencer, Massimo Dutti, Mico Boutique, Nautica, Onitsuka Tiger, Rustan’s Department Store, The Original Penguin, Topshop and Warehouse. Renowned Stylist Luis Espiritu put together the many accessories and clothes together for the show.
Topshop is a British multinational retailer which specializes in fashion clothing, shoes, make-up and accessories. It has around 440 shops across 37 countries and online operations in a number of its markets. Its current CEO is Katie Foster and it is part of the Arcadia Group, which is controlled by Sir Philip Green and owns a number of other retail outlets including Burton, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge.
Topshop was founded in 1964 as Peter Robinson’s Top Shop, a youth fashion brand within the Sheffield branch of Peter Robinson, a now-defunct British department store chain. The first stand-alone Topshop store was opened in 1970. In 1970, Topman was created as a spin-off brand to cater for male customers and is now run as a separate chain, although some stores are co-located.
There are more TOP SHOP Branches in the Philippines than there are in the U.S. and Hong Kong, The biggest of which is in Shang Plaza. The current Head of Design is Emma Farrow and Topshop Creative Director Kate Phelan.
Céline is a French luxury house founded in 1945 by Céline Vipiana. Today, it is an international luxury goods brand owned by LVMH, purchased in July 1988 for 2.7 billion French francs ($540 million).
Céline was originally created as a made-to-measure children’s shoe business that eventually grew into women’s shoes and accessories. The ready-to-wear line debuted in the 1960s. Celine Vipiana was the designer from 1945-1997.
American fashion designer Michael Kors was named the first ever women’s ready-to-wear designer and creative director for Celine in 1997. During his tenure at Céline, Kors turned the fashion house around with blockbuster accessories and a critically acclaimed ready-to-wear line. Kors designed for the label until 2004. Designers Ivana Omazic (2006–2009) and Roberto Menichetti (2005) followed after Kors. Phoebe Philo is the current head of design since 2009.
The business was formed in 1778 by William Clark, who began trading at 44 Wigmore Street in London as a drapers’ store. In 1813, William Debenham became a partner and the corporate name changed to Clark & Debenham. In 1818 the company opened a second store in Cheltenham, and in 1851, Clement Freebody became a partner so the name changed again to Debenham & Freebody. The business was incorporated as Debenhams Limited in 1905.
The modern Debenhams group grew from the acquisition of department stores in towns and cities throughout the UK, under the leadership of its chairman, Ernest Debenham. The first of these purchases, Marshall & Snelgrove at Oxford Street in London, was acquired in 1919. Later purchases included Harvey Nichols in London’s Knightsbridge in 1920. Most of the acquired stores retained their former identities until a unified corporate image was rolled out. The company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1928.
In 1976 the company acquired Browns of Chester. It remains the only UK store to have retained an individual identity.
In October 2010, Debenhams announced the launch of four new designer names to its fashion range; Jonathan Saunders, Preen, Jonathan Kelsey, and Roksanda Ilincic, who will be working with the retailer on a new concept called Edition.
Debenhams are the pioneers of designers on the high street, with a current portfolio of over 21 designers, spanning fashion, accessories, men’s, children’s wear and home wares over 48 ranges. The list includes: Betty Jackson, Matthew Williamson, Jasper Conran, Ben De Lisi, John Rocha and many more.

All ranges are perfect for women looking for Betty’s unique style and effortless chic at an affordable price. The Betty Jackson. Black collections are some of the most successful ranges at Debenhams.
