Explosive EXPENDABLES 3
The extraction point is the top of a building that’s about to explode. The Expendables have to get on a helicopter to avoid the oncoming army. Smilee (Kellan Lutz) is on a motorcycle wreaking havoc on tanks. How does he get on a roof without an elevator? He sees an incline right beside the abandoned building. He goes 250kph and ramps the bike off it. The bike is literally up about a hundred feet in the air for a few seconds, he jumps away from it and hangs off from a ledge on one of the top floors of the building. Two floors below him, Barney (Sylvester Stallone) is running for his life and narrowly escapes a blast from a tank. Barney turns a corner and now faces a dozen armed soldiers waiting for him.
After two huge action packed installments in Expendables 1 & 2, it’s hard to believe but the 3rd one is actually an even bigger film. Known for getting the biggest action stars of the past few decades: Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren are at it again. In this installment they are joined by Wesley Snipes of BLADE fame. Missing in this sequel are Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis.
After quoting “I’ll be back” in EXPENDABLES 2, Arnold as Trench repeats his old lines, “Get to the chopper” from PREDATOR and “I lied” from COMMANDO. Arnold is reprising his most famous role as the T-800 in TERMINATOR GENISYS set for release in 2015. Emilia Clarke more popularly known as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s GAME OF THRONES plays the pivotal Sarah Connor role.
One of the biggest names in Hollywood replaces Bruce Willis as CIA control that hires Barney: Harrison Ford. And unlike Willis’ character Church he also gets in on the action pretty quick. Harrison Ford made his career kicking ass IN SPACE as Han Solo, in the original religion starting STAR WARS. While Barney brags about piloting an airplane, try flying the Millennium Falcon. After INDIANA JONES where Ford fought the Nazis, he became the president of the United States in AIR FORCE ONE fighting hand to hand against terrorists. Ford is not just the last name of the biggest star here but also the vehicle of choice for Barney: Ford’s SVT Raptor.
Mad Mel Gibson is a fantastic bad guy. Jean-Claude Van Damme was the previous bad guy in 2 following Eric Roberts in the original. After Mel’s recent run in with the law and his lunatic recorded threats and rants from real life, casting him as weapons dealer who has committed crimes against humanity is perfect. Whether or not you love Mel Gibson from the Lethal Weapon series or despise him for his racist, alcoholic stupor, you’re going to want to have to see him in EXPENDABLES 3. In light of everything that’s happened, he’s become this figure you’d love to hate.
Truthfully, performance wise, story wise Mad Mel is the one that gives this film a real edge. As a viewer you can’t wait for that scene when Rocky gets to lay his hands on him and vice versa. Their rivalry and hatred is something that just has to be released and seen through a fight.
The stars aren’t the only reason this movie levels up. The earnings for each installment has increased and by now they have the money to blow up a real building. The Expendables get to do battle against a dozen tanks. They chose to have the setting in a fictional country called AZMANISTAN, yeah where all the badass people live. The backdrop is actually in Bulgaria, where a lot of Soviet weapons and arms were left over. So producers were able to take advantage the old buildings and even the manpower.
More than the previous sequels, this film also acknowledges that the Expendables are getting on with age. So Sly decides to recruit a younger team. Kelsey Grammer is in the role of Bonaparte recruiting a skillful but somewhat suicidal crew to go after the dreaded Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson). Kelsey leaves his famous TV persona FRASIER for this film.
UFC and MMA fans have been clamoring for the film debut of current Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey, who might as well be playing herself! She is being touted as UFC’s biggest star with the recent exit of Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. Fans will not be disappointed with the action sequences as she is seen as a bouncer using her judo throws and punches on five men all at the same time.
Her looks are closer to that of Renee Zellwegger, if the Oscar award-winning actress was buff and athletic. It was only natural for the physically gifted and athletic Rousey to do her own stunts and fight scenes. In a cage fight among the Expendables crew, she could easily knock out or submit all of them in real life. This is with the exception of former UFC Champ Randy Couture and Jet Li who is versed in Shaolin Kung Fu.
Reviews and fan feedback have been so overwhelming that she has already worked in FAST & FURIOUS 7 (2015) as well as ENTOURAGE (2015). There are also plans to give her the lead role in THE ATHENA PROJECT, based on a novel written by Brad Thor about an all female delta force team.
The new recruits also include Antonio Banderas as the overzealous Galgo. In a scene the ZORRO star sings El Novio de la Muerte (Bridegroom of Death) to Barney Ross. The anthem is the official hymn of the Spanish Legion of which Banderas was made honorary member in 2013. Former boxing WBC Welter weight champ turned actor Victor Ortiz also plays Mars in the new team. Maybe in the future Sly will include Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao in EXPENDABLES 4, battling Steven Seagal?
Just thinking about the casting makes every combat sports fan excited. People need that throwback, slam-bang action flick that has become few and far between these days. THIS IS IT with all of our heroes in one go. Whether it’s a flying leg lock from Rousey, a knife throw from Jason Statham and Wesley Snipes, machine gun fire from Terminator and Indiana Jones to an epic hand to hand combat between Rocky and Mad Mel, EXPENDABLES 3 blows the minds of every action fan.
