Fortunately for the public the amazing work by these four awardees can be seen in one currently running musical in GODSPELL. Children and fathers who want to make Mom happy can bring her to the show this Mother’s Day. GODSPELL has 8PM shows on May 6, 12, 13, 19 & 20. This is a very entertaining musical, which poses the question: is Christ’s work and deeds relevant in a chaotic modern world? Don’t let the subject matter intimidate it actually helps audiences understand the gospel and puts it into music that moves the very soul. Even kids are encouraged to watch.

One might wonder how, the awards slipped past such a star-studded show, especially since this is the second run since last year. This is because the Gawad Buhay award is only given to productions of organizations that are members of PHILSTAGE. Perhaps this will help motivate MUSIC ARTES, the producers of GODSPELL to join PHILSTAGE in the future, soon hopefully. As anyone can see that this version is definitely worthy of a few awards.

Bibeth Orteza was tapped as the librettist for her intimate knowledge of VST’s music. The long time scriptwriter and actress was there to actually there witness Vic Sotto, Joey De Leon, Tito Sotto during the recording of hits like: IPAGPATAWAD MO, ROCK BABY ROCK, MAGSAYAWAN etc. But according to her the true inspiration for the story is Nonoy Froilan who she idolized since she was young.

Orteza said, “I really wrote the material in my head based on Nonoy. We hailed from the same barrio Calbiga, Samar. So I came across this material. Nonoy was always a figure in my childhood. We all talked about him way back. I wanted to do something about him. I was there in the studio when these songs were recorded. This is a personal thing for me. We had a relative there in a play with his wife and then material is very familiar with me. I was around the making of the songs, it’s a full circle.”

Froilan was already one of the most celebrated figures in dance by the 70s. He was known as the Philippines’ premier danseur for three decades. He essayed all the leading roles in classical and contemporary ballet partnering world-renowned prima ballerinas such as Margot Fonteyn and Yoko Morishita. He has performed in countless major works by foreign and local choreographers.

Nonoy is in the role of Victor while his real life wife Edna Vida Froilan is cast opposite him as Teresa. This marks a comeback for Edna who also has a storied past as a premiere ballerina. BP Artistic Director Paul Morales is exhilarated with the prospect of seeing his favorite and most admired dancer on stage again.

Since retiring back in 1989, AWITIN MO AT ISASAYAW KO is Edna’s first major performance as a dancer as she plays the role of the elderly Teresa. Best remembered as the Firebird, Carmen, and Myrtha in GISELLE, she has essayed leading roles in numerous full-length classical ballets with American Ballet Theater stars such as Natalia Makarova and Patrick Bissell. A prolific choreographer, she has created many of the company’s signature works, such as MUTYA NG PASIG, ENSALADA, VISION OF FIRE and PETER PAN.

Ballroom dance champion Ednah Ledesma and former BP prince Butch Esperanza will alternately play the same roles at certain performances. Their younger counterparts will be essayed by current Ballet Philippines dancers Rita Angela Winder, Denise Parungao, Jean Marc Cordero, and Garry Corpuz.

Dekada 70 is still Relevant

A lot of things have changed since the first quarter storm of the 1970s and yet some of the events of the time have also proved to be eerily similar to the problems of today. Orteza goes on, “Merong metrocom, may natatakot, may napatay, may saranggola na lipad to signify hope. It speaks of the time. As a matter of fact we were managing a band there in Holiday Inn when sumabog sa Plaza (Miranda) Nonoy Zuñiga lost his leg. That’s how he lost his leg kasi ni-recall ko lang mga bagay bagay sa aking kabataan. That all went to the loves story. I’m really really happy Nonoy and Edna are doing this talagang sila ang na isip ko. I’m really proud to put them in the cast because wherever I’d go, whether I’m in an airport in Isabela lagi silang magkasama. It was really them.”

The story is not an exact replica of Edna & Nonoy’s real life love story but is more based on them as people. Orteza then used her own experiences from the era to write the libretto, “When I was talking to Vic Sotto sabi sakin ni Vic there is no way you can present it as a contemporary piece kasi ang music, mood really speaks of a particular period. I decided to come up with a love story shared flashbacks but set in Martial Law Manila. As a young actress who was part of rallying outside the CCP, ngayon I’m telling a story set in Martial Law Manila ang daming layers.”

The VST & Co. is considered one of the pioneering groups from the music genre known as the Manila Sound in the mid 70s. The group is composed of Vic Sotto, Spanky Rigor, Tito Sotto, Val Sotto, Celso Llavina, Monet Gaskell, Male Rigor, Roger Rigor, Jun Medina, Joey de Leon, Homer Flores, Chito Ilagan, Ben Escasa, Fred Concepcion, Boy Alcaide, and Clod Baria. Their impressive collection of hits has left a legacy that endures to this day.

Ednah Ledesma

Ednah Ledesma’s training as a dancer began when she was a child of eight. Her mother first enrolled her in ballet classes, which she continued up to the age of sixteen, along with jazz, Hawaiian, and hip-hop genres as well. She also participated in musical plays and got into stage dancing for a year, until she got married. She entered the world of ballroom dancing in 1997, and started joining competitions soon after. She and her partner John Derick Co started out in Asian competitions, like the IDSF International Open Latin in Japan in 2003, where they ranked 28th. They further proved themselves at the Blackpool Dance Festival in England, where they ranked second in the competition’s Senior Latin division in 2003 & 2004, and went on to win first prize in 2005. Ednah has served as a judge in SHALL WE DANCE, a Filipino reality dance competition program on TV5.

He became a member of the CCP Dance Company (now Ballet Philippines) in 1978, where he performed solo and principal roles such as Ravana (RAMA HARI), Sultan (ANG SULTAN), Mercutio (ROMEO AND JULIET), Rothbart (SWAN LAKE), Prince Charming (CINDERELLA), and Andres Bonifacio (BAYANI), to name a few. He later joined Singapore Dance Theater as a principal dancer in 1988 and Philippine Ballet Theater in 1995. His most recent roles include the king in BP’s 2002 & 2014 production of CINDERELLA, Step Sister in PBT’s 2010 production of the same ballet, as Ebenezer Scrooge in Edna Vida Froilan’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL in 2013.

DANCE MNL is a once in a lifetime event that has brought the three most prestigious Ballet companies of the Philippines together. From June 14-26, 2016, Ballet Manila, Ballet Philippines and The Philippine Ballet theater will conduct workshops, conferences and of course performances in CCP and Aliw Theater. It’s the ultimate ballet experience for fans, students and the public in general.

The goal is to make ballet more accessible to more people. CCP VP & Artistic Dir Chris Millado proudly proclaimed, “We got a grant to mobilize at least 100 of our community who hasn’t seen anything at the CCP, or seen dance. So we’re busing in 100 new audiences.” The Cultural Center of the Philippines is a venue sponsor along with the ALIW Theater and Star Theater.

Ballet Philippines Artistic Director Paul Morales provides the historical perspective of DNCE MNL, “Ballet Philippines is about 47 years old. Ballet Manila is celebrating 21st anniversary Philippine Ballet Theatre 30 years. That’s almost a hundred years na sinusuportahan natin ang ating mga mananayaw mga gumagawa ng ating mga sayaw. When you say professional ballet dance company the dancers are working 5 days a week often 8 hours a day. Really dedicating their lives to their art. I would say a little bit of competition is healthy. But more than that it’s really the passion: The passion and the commitment of all these artists to bring this art forward and to present it to the Filipinos. I’m really grateful my co directors are so gracious and so welcoming with this idea. They’ve given so much for this to be a special event.

Morales detailed what people can look out for, “We have three main components of Dance MNL. One is a conference and meetings towards industrialization and understanding the practice of dance in the Philippines. That will happen in two days. That will be the 21st and 22nd. The other aspect Lisa spoke about is the DANCE INTENSIVE, which is a two-week program you can have all the great dance teachers in Manila here. So we really encourage the young dancers to maximize that. That will happen through the whole run of the festival from the 14th to the 26th. Napaka raming classes, 90+ classes they can choose from. As Lisa mentioned we have a lot of our famous dancers from all the three different companies will be teaching there.”

The highlight are the performances, “We have about 10 special events. There’s the WINNERS Gala which celebrates all our winners. Local and international winners we could say these are the best of Philippine dance. As you know we have our local ballet competitions here at the CCP. We also have dancers who have really excelled internationally.”

Ballet Manila Artistic Director Lisa Macuja added, “I am very proud that Ballet Manila is one of the companies that is invited to take part in Dance Manila. I’m sure this festival is going to be a success. Because if it is a success it is something that will happen every two years. We’r really very very excited about this event.”

Whether you’re a beginner or a long time ballet dancer there are a myriad of classes you can attend. Lisa said, “Ballet Manila’s participation will be in the workshops. I will be giving master classes. Osias Barroso will be giving Master Classes. All of our teachers: Jonathan Janolo, Sofia Sangco-Peralta, Anselmo Dictado, Eileen Lopez will all be giving master classes in the different levels during the first week of the festival.”

Macuja gave a short run down of events, “Most of these classes will be held in Star Theater. The main performance in Aliw Theater will be Generation Next on June 26. So the idea being there will performances almost simultaneously in Aliw Theater, Star Theater the CCP Main Theater, the CCP little Theater, the Rehearsal Hall of CCP, the Little Theater lobby. There will be one performance after another.” She also made note of Ballet Manila alum Christine Roca who is now part of the Joffrey Ballet. Roca will be performing in the WINNERS CIRCLE gala, BALLET FILIPINO and the DANCE DIASPORA gala.

Macuja suggests that access pass for the classes is great value: “Festival passes, all access pass to more than 90 ballet classes available is going for P 5,000. An all access pass for all eleven performances is also going for P5,000. So if you want to attend as many classes as you want and you want to watch all the performances its P10,000. But if you think of all the other 2 week festivals all over the world its a bargain. To think that one master class in New York for example costs at least $25 just to take one master class in New York. So if you pay P5,000 about $125 for as many as 90 classes. That’s a real bargain. Even for a performance a full length GISELLE would go for at least $50 to a $100 U.S. in any big city. In the Cultural Center of the Philippines, normally it will be priced at P1,000, P1,500, P2,500 for an orchestra seat. For P5,000 you get 2 GISELLES and 3 Galas, modern dance companies and Dance Diaspora. There’s a theater in the round by the U.P. Dance Company.”

On top of that there are discounts noted Macuja, “The program is really diverse. The price is a bargain. We will be honoring senior citizen discount and student discounts at %50 off. The Philstage Premium Pass holders will also be honored. Sulit talaga kulang na lang RIDE all you can sa Star City!”

Paul Morales said, “Even if you look at the normal pricing this is cheaper. We decided to make this really a gesture to the community, to the public to make it as inclusive as possible. “

Unearthing

Daloy Dance Company

9:00PM

Bulwagang Francisca Reyes Aquino (CCP Rehearsal Hall)

Unearthing explores how the carnal and spiritual are linked and entangled. The bodies act on impulse, unearthing body conditioning and defences, and exploring what it truly means for the performer’s body to be receptive and responsive. Movement is used as a form of attunement and way to be sensitive to a deeper inward contact. Unearthing experiments on acts of migration from the physical to more vulnerable states of being.

Unearthing by Ea Torrado and Daloy Dance Company was premiered at the 2015 Karnabal Festival: Social and Performance Innovations. Wanggo Gallaga of the Manila Bulletin writes that the piece showcases a direction for Daloy that moves “further away from the conventional idea of what contemporary dancing is expected to be. Unafraid to explore awkward shapes or deal with simplistic narratives, the Daloy Dance Company presses forward in their offering of a very different kind of contemporary dance show for the Filipino audience.” Unearthing is set to be presented in Japan this coming July for Setouchi Trienalle and Asian Performing Arts Market 2016.

Debate

Tanghalang Pilipino’s MAGINING MANDIRIGMA is currently running at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino from February 19 to March 13, 2016. The Musical’s second run however, has now been recast with Liesl Batucan in the role of Mabini, replacing Delphine Buencamino. Arman Ferrer alternates the Emilio Aguinaldo role with David Ezra.

Tanghalang Pilipino is the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and has produced MABINING MANDIRIGMA with the support of the National Commission for the Culture and Arts. 2014 was the sesquicentennial birth of Apolinario Mabini (born July 23, 1864), the conceptual heart of the second phase of the Philippine Revolution.

Librettist Dr. Nick Tiongson is a very well respected member of the academe and is a member of the prestigious MANUNURI NG PELIKULANG PILIPINO. He was also the CCP’s vice-president and the artistic director from 1986 to 1994. Tiongson shared that the concept for the play was specifically for the 150th anniversary. He had already talked with TP Artistic Director Nanding Josef and expressed interest in producing something on Mabini. He said, “I always admired Mabini. Ibang klaseng hero hindi siya yung may dramatic death hindi ganoon. Pero very solid person, brilliant mind he just did his work day to day and refuse to give up on ideas.”

During the course of his extensive research he found out that other writers and biographers also admired Mabini. One of them is Nick Joaquin who admired the hero as one of the homegrown intellectuals, unlike Rizal and others who studied in Europe. Tiongson explained, “His law class was one of the most brilliant ever coming from UST. In that class he was recognized as the most brilliant. Grade wise he was better than Rizal. He’s amazing and he could not even afford textbooks. So he would borrow textbooks before class read the lesson. He had a photographic memory so he knew what they were talking about. Obviously not just photographic memory he understood what he was reading.”

The achievement may not have been as spectacular or dramatic as other heroes like Bonifacio or even Gen. Luna, “What he did was provide the whole ideology for the second phase of the revolution. Of course that’s a very intellectual thing. That’s not exactly everybody’s cup of tea. Hindi yon ganoon ka popular. He did not write fiction, Rizal wrote Noli, which is something enjoyable to read. What Mabini did was just as important. An American observer said without Mabini there would have been no second phase of the revolution. And it’s really true. He provided the whole ideology he provided the steps Aguinaldo had to take to dismantle the old order and replace it with a new order. The ideology of a new constitution, he believed in the equality of men and women. He believed women should have the same opportunities for education, professions and suffrage. Wala pang suffrage sa America.”

Viva

Mabini’s ideas were so advanced that not everyone was ready for them, “He was very much ahead of his time. In fact that was his tragedy that his vision for a nation was valid but most of our leaders were not ready to accept. Sinasabi nila dalawa himagsikan: Yung sandatahan at yung sa kalooban. E wala yung kalooban e. So kahit anung gawin ng sandatahan walang mangyayari. Wala naman pagbabago sa kalooban. (There were two revolutions: armed struggle and battle for the hearts of the people. But there was no change in the hearts and minds of the people) The same greed that the Spaniards had our own leaders had. So ano pinag-iba doon? Iba lang kulay pero kasakiman pa rin.”

The same greed, the same lust for power can be seen in our candidates today. According to Rappler, February 5, 2016- “In two separate resolutions on 6 docketed cases, the Ombudsman said it has jurisdiction to conduct its preliminary investigation that led it to find probable cause to file criminal charges against Binay, his son, and their co-respondents for graft, malversation of public funds, and falsification of public documents in connection with the bidding and construction of the carpark project.” Vice President Binay is currently running for the highest post of the land.

The Binay connection with political dynasties (ilustrados of the past) was made clearer in Bobby M. Tuazon’s opinion piece in PDI entitled ‘Probing Presidential Platforms’: “Unlike his rivals Binay openly defends political dynasties in defiance of the Constitution.”

MABINING MANDIRIGMA’s run is especially significant coming into the elections. The many lessons we learn and see on stage should help us determine our leaders in this crucial period.

There’s a very clear bridge between Mabini’s era and ours today. Tiongson explains, “That’s one reason we did it. How interesting that he was up against are exactly the same forces we still have today. What was mentioned in the end was the whole point, walang nagbabago. Ganoon pa rin, same greed diba? You keep celebrating independence day but you’re never free. Your people are always in bondage. Very often under their own kalahi. Dati foreigner ngayon sarili mong kababayan.” The statement is especially poignant for the EDSA Revolution Anniversary.

The casting of female actors Liesl Batucan & Delphine Buencamino was a stroke of genius according to Tionson, “He (Driector Chris Millado) wanted gender free casting. Its been a tradition males play female roles in Shakespeare even here our country so why not the opposite? The style is Brechtian, the point is ideas. The point is for the audience to analyze the ideas being presented not to feel emotion for any character. The steam punk style works very well for that. Alam mo kagad it is not trying to reproduce history. Its taking history and putting it in a medium that is now. That’s the guide for the music also.”

Delphine Buencamino was cast as Apolinario Mabini in its previous run. This run is with esteemed actress and vocalist Liesl Batucan. When asked about Mabini’s message Delphine said, “It speaks for itself. Every line he speaks is a statement we should take in. When I was researching him I realized how often this happens. All these issues are still the same. That’s why staging it now is so important. We still don’t think as one nation. That ideology should be the anchor where we do everything.”

Delphine is now a part of DULAANG U.P.’s TISOY BROWN: HARI NG WALA.

The theme of the production design is Steampunk, a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs. It was inspired by 19th Century industrial steam-powered machinery, provides a fitting backdrop to an already action-packed musical. Award winning designer and artist Toym Imao was tapped for the unique production design.

Best Original Musical

Director Chris Millado’s strategy of casting Liesl Batucan in the male title role is pure genius. NOT only did Delphine’s vocals standout in a cacophony of male voices, but also highlighted the fact that Mabini was one of the earliest proponents of gender equality in the Philippines. Because of the ingenious casting, the unique steam punk concept with the enigmatic figure of Mabini it is easily THE BEST original musical I’ve seen in years.

Librettist Dr. Nicanor Tiongson was kind enough to point out that Mabini (as a man) was the first Feminist in government. For me film, music, art and definitely theater fulfill its potential when it gives meaning beyond entertainment. MABINING MANDIRIGMA by Tanghalang Pilipino certainly falls into this elite category.

Audiences learn far more than the ‘sublime paralytic’ moniker that we have come to know from our textbook impression of Mabini. The casting forces us to think about Mabini the person, beyond his physical disability, beyond his gender. Although theater followers have seen and known Delphine’s body of work from IBALONG and countless others no other role has truly challenged her as singer and actress than this one. This lead role is, in a way, the perfect coming out party to showcase everything she is capable of as a performer.

Liesl Batucan on the other hand, displayed her incredible vocals as well as brilliant acting. We have come to know and love her vocals through her many productions with Repertory Philippines. The dance sequences are particularly challenging for Delphine and Liesl as they have to simulate a cripple struggling to move in a dream scene.

Delphine is the daughter of theater stalwarts Shamaine and Nonie Buencamino. They were a source of valuable information; “My parents are very supportive especially for this role because there was a time I didn’t want to do it. I wanted to do something else more on dance. I couldn’t do both at the same time. They said go for it. The rehearsals were only one month, we hardly had any time and its so complicated. A lot of it had to go to choreography, set changes. There’s hardly any time to discover acting. That’s why it really helped my parents were there. I asked them to go to rehearsals. They dropped by to give me notes. Even during the show marami pa rin akong notes. That’s where I got my really detailed acting notes na nakaka baliw pero mas masarap gumawa ng bagong show pag meron ka pang concrete na iimprove.”

ilustrados

Ilustrados and Political Dynasties

Dialogue can be long and complex but even this is used as an advantage. Sometimes when a debate ensues between the ilustrado congressmen and officers of the revolution there’s a sharp exchange much like a modern rap battle. Jonathan Tadioan as Felipe Buencamino belabors the rap like length. He almost has a battle of words and wits with CK Español in the role of Trias.

The group of ilustrados are portrayed as conniving villains: Tadioan is joined by Marco Viana (Calderon), JV Ibesate (Paterno) and Karl Jinco (Gregorio Araneta). They are the landed and educated class who think only of themselves and their self-interests, not unlike the trapos of today. They can also be the modern day politicians who have dynasties such as the Binays.

As much as Jejomar Binay wants to identify with the poor, his family is the classic case of a political dynasty. His son Junjun Binay was the Mayor of Makati before he was kicked out due to corruption cases. His daughter Nancy is a senator and other daughter Abigail Binay is a member of congress. Not to mention his wife Dr. Elenita Binay was a former Mayor of Makati as well. While Jejomar’s roots may have been humble, his immediate family has deeply entrenched themselves in political power. Which is worse than the ilustrado because they were more a class of supposedly educated and learned people not one singular family.

The ilustrados of Mabini’s time, the Political Dynasties of today have one thing in common: they both prioritize their self-interest while espousing nationalism and service to the poor. This very clear message HAS TO BE taken into account especially with the upcoming presidential and senatorial elections. We have to identify the many more political families who have entrenched themselves in power, locally or nationally and make sure to not vote for them.

There’s also a strong connection between Apolinario Mabini and Gen. Antonio Luna. People can see and appreciate it more in this musical than the popular and award winning film HENERAL LUNA. Although they are totally different both were deemed ‘radicals’ by the ilustrado. This is for the simple reason that the two had the best interest of the country in mind and heart. The ilustrado only sought to enrich themselves, control the Kongreso and manipulate Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo himself all of which they were able to achieve.

Pepe

Aldo Vencilao as Pepe

IF there is one role in MABINING MANDIRIGMA that represents the common man its Pepe played by the talented Aldo Vencilao. Pepe is the personal assistant that although poor and uneducated has a strong desire to learn and improve himself. Pepe values what he learns from Mabini more than his salary. He insisted on working long after Mabini was able to afford his services.

Steampunk & Hiphop

The combination of steam punk as a production design and hip-hop is very surprising and engaging. One doesn’t expect the combination especially in a historical themed musical but it works. The fast pace entails incredible coordination between choreography, set design and music. Performers have to be able to get themselves in character in vastly different situations, emotional states within minutes or even seconds.

Costumes by James Reyes immediately distinguish groups of characters. The garish, metallic accessories are the illustrados while the common people are dressed simply. Mabini stands out in plain white camiso de chino. In an interview Reyes shared, “We did sketches, it evolved. And then it went back to the first sketch. I was incorporating the Baro’t Saya with boots. Production designer Toym Imao is another fun person to work with. He’s another fan of the 80s with elements of Star Wars and Voltes Five in his works!”

IF there is one message that Apolinario Mabini could give our people today that is to choose our leaders wisely. We shouldn’t waste the sacrifices they’ve made for our country. With our votes, our democratic process we should choose the leaders who are not part of a political dynasty and who are not repressive.

My Angel this is my Valentine’s gift to you,

Written and photographed

By Jude Thaddeus L. Bautista

What we think and feel aren’t always pleasant. Sometimes they can be painful even nightmarish. There are traumatic experiences that inhabit our thoughts. There are places in our minds we don’t even know we had memories. Being able to visualize them can be extremely difficult if not impossible for most of us. Imagine being able to concretize them in various sculptures, objects, prints, literal x-rays that is what artist Gabriel Barredo was able to achieve.

In your own mind you have no choice but to be honest. Gabby has given us an open pass into the universe of his thoughts and emotions. Through his latest work and collaboration with Ballet Philippines in OPERA at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo that ran from February 13-16, 2016.

Barredo’s creative twin- choreographer Redha describes it best, “The extreme intensity of his work sparked my imagination to dream; dream about bodies about emotion and above all about life. The piece is a journey that allows us to meet ourselves through events we have never encountered.”

Enabling Artists

In reality OPERA was a triumph of a number of different artists working together to bring to life Gabriel Barredo’s vision. So many esteemed names in music, filmmaking and most of all dance have all contributed greatly for it coming to fruition.

Ballet Philippines President Margie Moran Floirendo gave credit to the organizations that made this once in a lifetime experience possible, “Our partner SILVERLENS, our artistic collaborators, and Art Fair Philippines 2016. The result is truly awe-inspiring fusion of artworks…we owe our utmost gratitude to the Embassy of France and KLM for helping us bring our choreographer Redha. And to CENTURY PARK HOTEL for sponsoring accommodations the entire duration of his visit. Of course we send our thanks to our board of trustees, subscribers and sponsors especially Globe Platinum and Auto Nation Group the dealer of Mercedes Benz for their continued support and patronage. As you experience this rare and spectacular collaboration of visual art and contemporary dance. You enable our artists to continually raise the standards of their work. We are truly grateful for your support in helping us bring these consummate talents into the nation’s limelight.”

Former Miss Universe Margie Moran also mentioned the lovely and extremely talented guest dancer Carissa Adea who has lit up the stage in countless BP productions as principal dancer. To BP and her fans Karé was a very welcome sight giving us yet another memorable performance.

Film & Music

From the lobby to the very early moments of the show there are projections of images, a series of short films. Different images of child’s body in decay overtaken by flies, different body parts, different singular eyes intercut each other. Cinematographer and filmmaker Lyle Sacris produced the videos. BP Artistic Director Paul Alexander Morales sad, “Lyle together with Erwin (Romulo) always works with Gabby apparently. We’re so amazed with the effort the people at PABRIKA- film production unit, which is the sponsor of all the videos that you will see. They really had a proper set up a whole shooting for it. We’re very grateful. They donated that work we didn’t pay them. It’s a very well put together film. They are a series of short films of different images that all take off from OPERA.”

Erwin Romulo is co-librettist with Yvette Tan, brainstormed with Gabby for a workable storyline translated into words. It’s a long time creative relationship according to Barredo, “He’s written every show I’ve done. He was 13 years old he was hanging around me na.” Erwin was also musical director for Erik Matti’s ON THE JOB and HONOR THY FATHER. Romulo’s musical contacts and credibility has allowed him to tap Armi Millare to do the vocals for OPERA along with composer Malek Lopez, Caliph8 who did the percussion, MPC samples and Fred Sandoval for bass and electronics.

Kinetic Sculptures

“Gabby Barredo is known for kinetic sculptures. This time nothing is moving, it’s the dancers who are the moving sculptures. So they have to be part of the entire piece”, said Costume Designer James Reyes. The emphasis is the human form and the costumes reflect that. Reyes and Barredo agreed “it should be as nude as possible.”

This is a complete departure from Reyes work in TP’s MABINING MANDIRIGMA also in CCP on Feb 19 through March. The concept there is turn of the century baro’t saya meets steam punk, wild, garish with metallic embellishments and accessories.

For Opera Reyes said, “We used spandex, we used mesh, I even did some hand painting later on the costumes. But you don’t notice it because it’s almost nude. We had to introduce one character wearing a long dress (Death-Denise Parungao). With The Mistress we introduced lace elements (played by Rita Angela Winder).”

Modern Dance

The choreography of Redha has a filmic quality. There’s ample use of slow movements of the main characters while the ensemble runs around, sometimes running in reverse. Redha is like a film director using slow, fast motion and even rewind. The themes of sensuality, violence are easily presented in modern dance.

Another BP alum Associate Choreographer Ronelson Yadao helped the large cast execute Redha’s complex vision. Carissa Adea has distinguished herself as the warm figure The Mother. Denise Parungao has emerged as a new star of BP as the haunting, ever present Death.

There was also a very moving homosexual love triangle between Earl John Arisola (The Homonculus), Victor Maguad and Erl Sorilla (The Twins). While the movements can be deemed sexual with male embrace and even crotches and legs intertwined, there’s a strong feeling of emotional intimacy between them going way beyond the physical.

BP Opera Love Triangle

World-renowned choreographer Redha is a French national of Algerian descent. He has choreographed music videos for the likes of Michael Jackson, Elton John, Diana Ross and for dance sequences in films of Roman Polanski and Francis Ford Coppola.

Redha explained, “While Gabby’s works are full of sensuality the theme of birth and death are also very evident. Working with the dancers to bring out and explore this humanity has taken us all on a roller coaster of emotions. I wanted to show how bodies of dancers can be distorted, leading towards the impossible, to reflect that what words cannot say and touch the audience on a visceral and emotional level.”

Opera is a true rarity in modern dance done by Ballet Philippines. Artistic Director Paul Morales adds, “They do both modern and contemporary here (in BP). It’s true we haven’t had a truly modern show in a long time. It’s great for them. Jean Marc Cordero is playing the evil character today (The Watcher), which is very unusual for him. They have different things to sink their teeth into.”

Unfiltered Thoughts

You inhabit Barredo’s universe upon stepping on to the lobby, where imposing scaffolding greets you in the middle. In it are various torsos, limbs and the omnipresent eye. The production design on stage is not just a ‘set’ but an installation where audiences are welcomed to view after the performance.

Sometimes it takes a little while to figure out the truth in art, which happened to me in this case. Sometimes we are not able to figure anything out from art at all. In this case you have to experience it, see it, surround and immerse yourself in all of it, the exhibit and the show.

Once you understand that the pieces are representations of his unfiltered ideas and thoughts, whether random, difficult or painful you accept them for what they are. You don’t have to impose your own or the world’s logic.

Honesty

Barredo told Eric S. Caruncho of Inquirer Lifestyle that it’s MORE about the process than it is the RESULT. Because he’s JUST being honest with himself as painfully grotesque as that may be and that’s what you see. These aren’t pleasant, happy objects. He’s not concerned with the conventional norms of beauty and symmetry, at least not in this exhibit. We discover that raw, unique honesty however when concretized in that way has a beauty of its own.

But through it all it was SO cathartic for him, he sort of exorcised these demons and that’s what we see and feel from his work. Maybe, just maybe even a little bit of his courage and honesty can rub off on all of us so we can exorcise our own demons.

If Gabby was this open and honest about his own thoughts, feelings, his mind, why can’t I? Why can’t all of us confront our own dark thoughts, experiences and be honest with and TO ourselves most of all?
