Venganza! Pag hihigante!

There was a palpable fear and discomfort inside the Tanghalang Huseng Batute, (Studio Theater) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines during the performance of ANG PAG-UUSIG (A translation of Arthur Miller’s THE CRUCIBLE) by Tanghalang Pilipino. The show is a must watch for all Filipinos and runs until October 22, 2017.

Although it was set in the 1690s, it was like looking into the lives and homes of modern day Filipinos who have been suspected as drug pushers or those who lost loved ones in Tokhang or the War On Drugs. The official number of lives lost is at least 3,400 (as of June 2017) but anyone who watches the news each day knows the real number is much higher. Pres. Duterte said recently, “Pumatay tayo (Let’s kill) another 32 everyday, maybe we can reduce what ails this country,” From Philstar.com: 20 killed in Manila overnight after bloody Bulacan raid

The definition of crucible is a severe test, which refers to the trials in Salem and the era which put to death innocent people mostly women wrongly accused of witchcraft. Filipino, like most Asian languages, is high context, with one word having several meanings. Pag-uusig is not a direct translation of crucible, according to google translate its prosecution. In an interview with director Dennis Marasigan (a screenwriter himself) he preferred the translation as persecution, which fits the story even better. It was Marasigan’s idea to use Pag-Uusig as the title, not taking anything away from the masterful translation of Jerry Respeto, whose work is quoted above.

Storied playwright Arthur Miller best explains his own work through COLLECTED ESSAYS published by Penguin books in 2016. Portions of the essay were quoted in the program of PAG-UUSIG along with valuable insights from the creative team. The official program (priced at P150) is an essential resource and companion to appreciate the play. More importantly it grants us a better understanding of what’s happening in our country today.

Miller’s Warning

Miller writes about THE CRUCIBLE, “Is it a political play? It is I think, but in a particular sense. It is very often done in Latin America just before a dictatorship is about to take over—as a warning and just after one has been overthrown, as a reminder…Its underlying reference is political paranoia whichever side makes use of that source of power.”

Two weeks into the run of PAG-UUSIG (October 13) President Duterte threatened his ‘enemies’ by having them all arrested and establishing a revolutionary government, “Sige mag-demonstrate kayo, bring it to a point na talagang tatagilid ang gobyerno. Alam ng military isa sa mga active na mag-destabilize is the communist. Do you think police and military will sympathize with you? I was elected by the people. If I sense the country is about to go overboard, I will declare a revolutionary government. Hindi ko kayo tinatakot pero hulihin ko kayong lahat, and I will declare a full-scale war against the NPA (New People’s Army),”. From ABS CBN News: Duterte Threatens to Set Up Revolutionary Government.

In the same article he identifies plotters believing that the Central Intelligence Agency is in a conspiracy with the Communist Party of the Philippines / New People’s Army to overthrow his regime. This is ignoring the fact that the CPP/NPA has an anti-U.S. Imperialism dogma throughout its more than 50 year existence.

Duterte also believes that reputable news website Rappler.com is controlled by the CIA without offering any basis. Founder Maria Ressa is a well-respected media figure having worked as CNN’s lead investigative journalist in Asia for two and a half decades and was head of ABS CBN News and Current Affairs. The Paranoid Becomes A Leader

Milller continues, “Paranoia has a power and it rises not basically from ravings about plots and hidden conspiracies but from the grain of recognizable fact around which the fantasies are woven. The paranoid feels endangered by some person or group mysteriously controlling his actions despite his will. His violence therefore is always defensive, trained against oppressor who means to kill him before he can kill them.” For Filipinos this helps explain the oft-repeated excuse in the loss of life in police operations. The term is nanlaban, which means fought back therefore a justification for the police to use force thereby killing the suspect.

Miller also offers an explanation how the paranoid becomes a leader, “His job therefore is to unmask and disarm, to find the seemingly innocent traces of the pervading malevolence and he comes to recognize hostility even in the way a person holds his hands or turns his head. His only hope is power, power to neutralize the dangers around him. Naturally since those dangers can be anywhere his power must also be total in order to work. And of course it is true that to one degree or another we are, in fact hostile to each other, and when we are accused of holding that hostility, we do indeed hate the accusation and the accuser. So that the paranoid creates the reality which proves him right. And this is why the paranoid, who in normal times might merely end in an institution can rise to the leadership of a society which is really insecure and at a loss of spiritual debility.”

McCarthyism and Impeachments

Miller wrote THE CRUCIBLE in 1953, the heyday of McCarthyism. It was an era that was also marked by paranoia and persecution of ‘accused’ communists. He described the parallelisms between the two, “Three hundred years apart both prosecutions were alleging membership in a secret disloyal group. Should the accused confess his honesty could be proved only the same way – by naming former confederates nothing less. Thus the informer became the very proof of the plot and the investigation’s necessity. Finally, in both eras, since the enemy was first and foremost an idea, the normal evidentiary proof of disloyal actions was either deemphasized, left in limbo or not required at all. And indeed actions finally became completely irrelevant. In the end the charge itself, suspicion itself all but became the evidence of disloyalty”

Days before President Duterte made his threat of arresting his ‘enemies’ via a revolutionary government, Commission on Elections Chairman Andy Bautista was impeached in congress October 11. This is only the latest among other impeachment complaints against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales. Both women are outspoken critics of Duterte’s War On Drugs and have impeccable reputations in the judiciary.

While there have been impeachment trials from previous administrations, only under Duterte has there been impeachment complaints against 3 separate officials. The complaints all come within his first year and a half in office. One of them against the Ombudsman, which ironically is defined as “charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints of maladministration or a violation of rights. The ombudsman is usually appointed by the government or by parliament, but with a significant degree of independence.”

A Farce

Former COMELEC Chair Sixto Brillantes described Bautista’s impeachment, “(It’s) a total farce. I am fully aware that the process of impeachment is both political and legal. It is totally, absolutely and purely political because all legal aspects were brushed aside.’ Citing one reason, he said the House committee on justice had determined that the complaint itself was accompanied by a “deficient, defective, flawed and infirmed verification.” From philstar.com: Comelec Chief’s Impeachment a Farce Says Predecessor

The article continues, “Some congressmen who attended the caucus and who did not want to be named told journalists that there was a “marching order from the Palace” to impeach Bautista. Duterte denied this on Friday, saying he does not meddle with his allies in Congress, some of whom are also claiming that he has given them the go-signal to impeach Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.”

Miller’s words ring ever true, ‘Indeed actions finally became completely irrelevant. In the end the charge itself, suspicion itself all but became the evidence of disloyalty.’

Hoy! Say Moh! Soxie Topacio!

Written and photographed

By Jude Bautista

The first time I met Soxie Topacio was a few years back in PETA (Philippine Educational Theater Association). He was directing HIMALA the Musical and was there for a rehearsal. Naturally he was barking directions left and right. But as soon as you start talking to him he had a ready smile was warm and accommodating. Although the only time he could spare for a brief interview was through a cigarette break. I told him I remembered his work in DUPLEX on TV and that made him smile.

When news broke last July 21, 2017 that Soxie Topacio had passed away from pneumonia and complications from lung cancer, I was genuinely shocked. I did not know that he was diagnosed with lung cancer as reported by PDI.

Soxie Topacio & Cynthia Guico; SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

During PETA’s 50th Anniversary in April he was in high spirits, hosting, singing on stage, I couldn’t imagine him being sick. Although I did notice he was wearing a hat that did hide the loss of his silver hair.

from right: Soxie Topacio, Joel Lamangan, Dessa Quesada-Palm, CB Garrucho, and Beng Cabangon. SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

But during Philstage’s GAWAD BUHAY awards in May, I did notice he was more frail. He seemed less energetic and didn’t even bother to wear a hat. That night was special because they were able to give a glowing tribute to the work of the consummate thespian, teacher, writer and director of stage, TV and film.

A lot of credit should be given to PHILSTAGE Pres. Audie Gemora and the jury for having the foresight of giving him the NATATANGING GAWAD BUHAY award (Lifetime Achievement award). PHILSTAGE is an association which counts the most prestigious theater productions, dance groups and companies among its members. The PHILSTAGE jury consists of Vlad Bunoan, Gibbs Cadiz, Glenn Mas, Elka Requinta, Jovy Zarate, Ralph Galan, Steve Villaruz, Martin Lopez, Chantal Primero, Romano Jorge, Tats Manahan, Ricky Toledo, Chito Vijandre Cora Llamas, Vincent Gregory Yu, Fred Hawson and Philip Cu-Unjieng.

PETA was then able to produce an admirable tribute for that segment of the awards show. A wonderful script written by Phil Noble encapsulated Soxie’s colorful career. Which was brought to life by Norbs Portales, a young actor of PETA whom he had mentored. Norbs channeled his inner Soxie and portrayed the famous character Nene from DUPLEX and IT’S A DEAL. Shows that were enumerated by INTERAKSYON and also his most recent TV work.

Norbs Portales performed as Soxie Topacio in the role of Nene. The 9th PHILSTAGE GAWAD BUHAY was held May 10, 2017 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP. Photo by Jude Bautista

Nene or Neneng is the Filipino term for young girl, while Soxie at the time (80s) was an overweight gay man. So his TV name alone was comedy gold. Norbs used the flamboyant voice that made Soxie famous complete with replacing ‘s’ with th and z’s much like a homosexual Elmer Fudd from Looney Tunes.

right: Norbs Portales reminded us how hilariously funny Soxie was as a comedian. The 9th PHILSTAGE GAWAD BUHAY was held May 10, 2017 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP. Photo by Jude Bautista

We learned in such a casual, hilarious way how National Artist for film Lino Brocka was one of the people who helped Soxie break into TV and film. We learned how PETA founder Cecile Guidote-Alvarez inspired him and others to give of themselves and their art for the country.

National Artist for film Lino Brocka

We were laughing so hard that the message of his sacrifice and contributions went straight to our hearts. So it was really no surprise when the Ramon Magsaysay Awards considered as the Nobel Peace Prize of Asia, included among its awardees PETA- as an organization. The awardees were announced just this week, July 28. I don’t think it was a coincidence that Soxie Topacio passed away just over a week before.

A young Cecile Guidote established PETA in 1967. Soxie Topacio joined in 1969 at age 17 and was soon conducting theater and acting workshops in the remotest and poorest parts of the country.

God and man conspired to give Soxie a huge send off in recognition of his life and work. He would be so proud that PETA is honored in this way. He played no small part in that as member since 1969.

Soxie Topacio was given the NATATANGING GAWAD BUHAY. The 9th PHILSTAGE GAWAD BUHAY was held May 10, 2017 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP. Photo by Jude Bautista

Included below is the tribute during the Gawad Buhay awards written by Phil Noble and co-written / performed by Norbs Portales as Nene (Soxie’s famous TV character). Immediately after the performance by Norbs he called Soxie on stage who sang ALAY NG LUMIKHA, one of the PETA anthems with playwright Rody Vera and a half dozen members.

Then also included below is Soxie’s acceptance speech where we learn from his own words his personal journey. He relates the experience of conducting (with other PETA members) acting workshops in war torn villages, victims and fighters for varying causes, even the urban poor. His speech puts everything into clear perspective. This is especially valid given Pres. Duterte’s most recent mindless, brash statement of ‘bombing Lumad schools’ as NPA sympathizers or hot bed of NPA recruitment. Soxie’s experiences in Cagayan De Oro and many other remote areas bring to light that they are themselves victims of violence.

PETA Pres. CB Garrucho; SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

Through his speech we find out exactly how and why PETA deserves the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Mother Soxie’s personal evolution and growth as teacher-artist is just one example of PETA’s mission.

Thank you to PHILSTAGE organizers of Gawad Buhay, Thank you Soxie Topacio, thank you and congratulations to PETA.

Read on enjoy, laugh, reflect and be inspired.

Sa PETA talaga ako nagsimula. Fresh na fresh pa ko. Virgin na virgin. 17 years old ay ka tagal na yoon. Actually meron nagpakuha yung PETA meron daw event.

Ayon we taped, we performed. Eto nagmura sakin noon e.

Do you study here?

O yung minura mo dati! Ano?

If you have time and you want to audition go to the 4th floor.

On video wall is Maryrose Raj who played Josephine Bracken in PETA’s RIZAL.

Haaa? Ha! Join akoh.

Since then I stayed. In one season ang dami kong ginawa: nag SM ako, nag Sound ako,

Nag Voice ako at nag artista ako. Lahat yan sabay sabay nakakaloka!

Go!

Pumasok kayo!”

Kaming mga audience Ha? Ha? Ha? Mga audience ka sali pala sa play!

Eto pa 1896 ang first true musical ng PETA. Pati si Ariel Rivera pina kanta ko!

On video wall is Ariel Rivera from PETA’s 1896.

MINSA’Y ISANG GAMO GAMO, first play ni Ate Guy.

My friends in PETA sila talaga yung nagdala sakin sa mundo ng TV at pelikula.

Nora Aunor was cast in PETA’s MINSA’Y ISANG GAMO GAMO

So ako, si Gardy (Labad), si Nonon ako yung Executive Director so after 2 years tumawag ba naman sakin.

“You only live once! Yan ba ang kontribusyon mo sa bayang ito???”

TI-NA-MA-AN akooh!

Soxie Topacio acceptance speech for the NATATANGING GAWAD BUHAY AWARD

Nais kong pa salamatan ang Philstage for giving me this award.

PHILSTAGE Pres. Audie Gemora & VP Maribel Legarda; The 9th PHILSTAGE GAWAD BUHAY was held May 10, 2017 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP. Photo by Jude Bautista

Rep, Teatro Tomasino, Sining Kambayoka, U.E. Dramatic Club, Kulturang Atin Foundation at marami pang iba.

Actor / director Nonon Padilla, one of many teacher-artists like direk Soxie in the early years of PETA.

Noong sumali ako sa PETA ay 17 years old ako. That was the year 1969. Noong panahon na yon ang U.P. Campus ay punong puno ng mga kaganapan. Kabikabilang boycott, mass action, walk out. Eto ang tinaguriang First quarter storm.

foreground from left: Carlon Matobato and Gio Gahol; SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

Lagi niyang sasabihin. “You only live once. And for that one life what is your contribution to your country?”

Michael Odoemene and Neomi Gonzales; SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

It took many years for me to discover the answer to it. When Cecile left we lost a leader who knows everything. What play to put up, where to get the funds, when will be the next workshop? Mabuti na lang through the help of other PETA members we were able to revive the company.

from left: PETA Executive Director Beng Cabangon and President CB Garrucho. SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

Soxie Topacio; SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

A young Nanding Josef in KALINGA directed by Soxie Topacio.

Grabe mag mura at marami pang ibang workshop.

from left: Joel Lamangan, Soxie Topacio and Mae Paner; SINGKWENTA PETA’s 50th Anniversary Concert was held April 7 & 8, 2017 at the PETA Theater Center. Photo by Jude Bautista

At marami pang iba.

Again Maraming Salamat.

(3 Stars and a Sun from PETA) and

John Batalla-Outstanding Lighting Design

Fortunately for the public the amazing work by these four awardees can be seen in one currently running musical in GODSPELL. Children and fathers who want to make Mom happy can bring her to the show this Mother’s Day. GODSPELL has 8PM shows on May 6, 12, 13, 19 & 20. And there are 3PM shows on May 7, 14 & 21, all at the Carlos P Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza.

This is a very entertaining musical, which poses the question: is Christ’s work and deeds relevant in a chaotic modern world? Don’t let the subject matter intimidate it actually helps audiences understand the gospel and puts it into music that moves the very soul. Even kids are encouraged to watch.

A scene from GODSPELL displaying the work of Lighting Designer John Batalla, who won at the 9th Gawad Buhay for his work in CONSTELLATIONS. GODSPELL has 8PM shows on May 6, 12, 13, 19 & 20. Jef Flores is in the lead role as Jesus. Myke Salomon is both John the Baptist and Judas while winning an award as a Musical Director. Menchu Lauchengco Yulo shows her vocal range while being the Artistic Director in Resorts World Manila. The only non-actor among them is Lighting Director John Batalla whose work is literally seen throughout GODSPELL.

One might wonder how, the awards slipped past such a star-studded show, especially since this is the second run since last year. This is because the Gawad Buhay award is only given to productions of organizations that are members of PHILSTAGE. Perhaps this will help motivate MUSIC ARTES, the producers of GODSPELL to join PHILSTAGE in the future, soon hopefully. As anyone can see that this version is definitely worthy of a few awards.

Bibeth Orteza was tapped as the librettist for her intimate knowledge of VST’s music. The long time scriptwriter and actress was there to actually there witness Vic Sotto, Joey De Leon, Tito Sotto during the recording of hits like: IPAGPATAWAD MO, ROCK BABY ROCK, MAGSAYAWAN etc. But according to her the true inspiration for the story is Nonoy Froilan who she idolized since she was young.

Orteza said, “I really wrote the material in my head based on Nonoy. We hailed from the same barrio Calbiga, Samar. So I came across this material. Nonoy was always a figure in my childhood. We all talked about him way back. I wanted to do something about him. I was there in the studio when these songs were recorded. This is a personal thing for me. We had a relative there in a play with his wife and then material is very familiar with me. I was around the making of the songs, it’s a full circle.”

Froilan was already one of the most celebrated figures in dance by the 70s. He was known as the Philippines’ premier danseur for three decades. He essayed all the leading roles in classical and contemporary ballet partnering world-renowned prima ballerinas such as Margot Fonteyn and Yoko Morishita. He has performed in countless major works by foreign and local choreographers.

Nonoy is in the role of Victor while his real life wife Edna Vida Froilan is cast opposite him as Teresa. This marks a comeback for Edna who also has a storied past as a premiere ballerina. BP Artistic Director Paul Morales is exhilarated with the prospect of seeing his favorite and most admired dancer on stage again.

Since retiring back in 1989, AWITIN MO AT ISASAYAW KO is Edna’s first major performance as a dancer as she plays the role of the elderly Teresa. Best remembered as the Firebird, Carmen, and Myrtha in GISELLE, she has essayed leading roles in numerous full-length classical ballets with American Ballet Theater stars such as Natalia Makarova and Patrick Bissell. A prolific choreographer, she has created many of the company’s signature works, such as MUTYA NG PASIG, ENSALADA, VISION OF FIRE and PETER PAN.

Dekada 70 is still Relevant

A lot of things have changed since the first quarter storm of the 1970s and yet some of the events of the time have also proved to be eerily similar to the problems of today. Orteza goes on, “Merong metrocom, may natatakot, may napatay, may saranggola na lipad to signify hope. It speaks of the time. As a matter of fact we were managing a band there in Holiday Inn when sumabog sa Plaza (Miranda) Nonoy Zuñiga lost his leg. That’s how he lost his leg kasi ni-recall ko lang mga bagay bagay sa aking kabataan. That all went to the loves story. I’m really really happy Nonoy and Edna are doing this talagang sila ang na isip ko. I’m really proud to put them in the cast because wherever I’d go, whether I’m in an airport in Isabela lagi silang magkasama. It was really them.”

The story is not an exact replica of Edna & Nonoy’s real life love story but is more based on them as people. Orteza then used her own experiences from the era to write the libretto, “When I was talking to Vic Sotto sabi sakin ni Vic there is no way you can present it as a contemporary piece kasi ang music, mood really speaks of a particular period. I decided to come up with a love story shared flashbacks but set in Martial Law Manila. As a young actress who was part of rallying outside the CCP, ngayon I’m telling a story set in Martial Law Manila ang daming layers.”

Ednah Ledesma

Ednah Ledesma’s training as a dancer began when she was a child of eight. Her mother first enrolled her in ballet classes, which she continued up to the age of sixteen, along with jazz, Hawaiian, and hip-hop genres as well. She also participated in musical plays and got into stage dancing for a year, until she got married. She entered the world of ballroom dancing in 1997, and started joining competitions soon after. She and her partner John Derick Co started out in Asian competitions, like the IDSF International Open Latin in Japan in 2003, where they ranked 28th. They further proved themselves at the Blackpool Dance Festival in England, where they ranked second in the competition’s Senior Latin division in 2003 & 2004, and went on to win first prize in 2005. Ednah has served as a judge in SHALL WE DANCE, a Filipino reality dance competition program on TV5.
