We love Irma Adlawan in so many roles on TV and film, most recently in MMK, BAMBOO FLOWERS and EDNA (directed and starred in by Ronnie Lazaro). TITSER where Irma co stars w Lovi Poe is still being aired over at GMANewsTV. My favorite Irma Adlawan performance was in the Cinemalaya film PANGGAGAHASA KAY FE by Alvin Yapan, which garnered so many awards. Irma was in the lead role of a mysterious, non-literal film, which debuted the now famous director Alvin Yapan. So when she came out on stage as a singer it was such a pleasant surprise. We heard a soulful, jazzy rendition of SA KANYANG PILING.

While Jesse Lucas composed the music, the lyrics were written by no less than her husband Dennis Marasigan for NORTH DIVERSION ROAD. The emotion that we heard from Irma was real and sincere. She came out in support of her good friend Jesse Lucas in FULL RANGE concert last August 20, 2015 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino in CCP. She convinced us that maybe could also have a career in music if she chose to. Click here for the first installment of this article. Irma was just one of many talented artists who lent their voices to the composer who has been able to touch lives with his music.

Jesse Lucas initially did not pursue a career in music. He graduated Cum Laude in BS Psychology at the Saint Louis University in Baguio City. His creative side yearned to be developed and sought out the best teachers of the time. Jesse settled on studying composition at the University of the Philippines’ College of Music. This is where he met and learned from two of the best: Ryan Cayabyab and Josefino Toledo.

Early in his career he started out making music for theater namely the Gantimpala Theater Foundation and Dulaang U.P.. From there he gradually worked his way until he composed music for film which then grew to TV and many other commissioned work such as the UAAP opening in 2014 and NCAA opening in 2012.

To date he has done more than 80 films, 30 TV shows, 40 musicals and plays. In 2008 alone he was able to finish compositional work for 8 films: Jose Javier Reyes’ MAGAKAIBIGAN, ONE NIGHT ONLY, MY MONSTER MOM, WHEN LOVE BEGINS, Don Cuaresma’s LOVING YOU, Joel Lamangan’s MANAY PO 2, Joey Morel’s LATAK, Maryo J. Delos Reyes TOROTOT and 4 for theater: SANDOSENANG SAPATOS-VCCPA, Gantimpala Theater Foundation’s PAGONG AT MATSING, SLEEPING BEAUTY, including his seminal work for Philippine Ballet Theater’s DARANGEN NI BANTUGEN.

Lucas said, “When we were putting the show together, we thought I had to include the work I did and still do, which is scoring movies and well loved teleseryes. It’s very different from creating musicals. But the challenge is just as exciting.”

HENERAL LUNA the film has been garnering a lot of critical acclaim and sudden surge of popularity. It has also become the official Philippine entry for the Oscar Best Foreign Language category. Back in 2002, Jesse Lucas wrote the music for ANG PAGPATAY KAY LUNA from Tanghalang Pilipino. In FULL RANGE, a trio of the best in theater came together to perform a suite from that famous production: Sheila Francisco, Franco Laurel and Sweet Plantado. Francisco with her vast stage experience made audiences feel the pain and anguish from that one song.

In 1997, Nora Aunor, the late Nida Blanca, Judy Ann Santos, Jao Mapa starred in BABAE directed by Lupita Kashiwahara. It was the very first film Jesse Lucas scored.
Jesse Lucas never forgot his first big break in the film industry: “Thank you to the film director who gave me my first film work Lupita Aquino-Kashiwahara in her 1997 film BABAE. Thank you for the priceless experience of having to work with the country’s master film directors: Adolf Alix Jr., Mario O’Hara, Maryo J. Delos Reyes, Jeffrey Jeturian and Joel Lamangan. Most especially Jose Javier Reyes whom I had the honor of doing the music for most of his films. Our collaboration, which started in his 1999, film LUKSONG TIMIK. Thank you very much direk Joey for I could not have acquired my taste and the ‘pulso’ without your guidance.”

Lucas career has spanned film, theater and dance. Lucas explains, “I’d like to take this chance to thank the people who gave me my first breaks. These are people whom I ‘ve worked with and continually inspire me to this day: Jake De Asis for giving me my first break in the musical production KATIPUNAN. Franie Zamora for my first legit theater production- KANSER. Endless gratitude to the librettists and directors I’ve worked with in theater: Jose Jeffrey Camañag, Jose Dennis Teodisio, Rony Bertubin, Paul Dumol, Andre Tiangco, Dennis Marasigan, Ogie Juliano, Jose Estrella, Tony Mabesa, Tony Espejo, Chris Millado, Nonon Padilla and Floy Quintos.”

Lucas also thanks the many dance and theater companies he has worked with: Musical Theater Philippines, Dulaang U.P., Gantimpala Theater Foundation, Tanghalang Pilipino, Ballet Philippines and the Philippine Ballet Theatre.

It was only fitting that in FULL RANGE Camille Lopez Molina performed an enthralling vocal performance in AWIT NI BUGAN. The song is from CHANTED JOURNEYS by Philippine Ballet Theatre. Two of the lead dancers: Lobreza Pimentel and Peter San Juan excerpted the dance scene choreographed by Gener Caringal.

PHILIPPINE BALLET THEATRE
Philippine Ballet Theatre after nearly 30 years since inception, Philippine Ballet Theatre continues to forge fresh performance art through the fusion of European classical technique, regional interpretation and experimental forms designed to deliver a contemporary ballet experience uniquely PBT. Formed in 1987, PBT is the culmination of six Philippine ballet companies and two academies: Dance Theatre Philippines, Manila Metropolis Ballet, Hariraya Ballet Company, Dance Concert Company, Gener Caringal Dance Repertory Company, Dance Arts Philippines, Ben Lor Ballet Academy and the Academie of the Performing Arts. This synthesis has become the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ second resident dance company.

FLOY QUINTOS
As a director Floy Quintos is known for his range. He has directed full-length plays, musicals and concerts of both classically trained and pop artists. Added to this he has directed cultural events, television specials, documentaries, fashion galas and special events. A product of both Ateneo De Manila and the University of the Philippines he has been directing for over 25 years.

Though he is more popularly known as a director for events and of pop concerts: Ai ai Delas Alas, Jed Madela, Kuh Ledesma, Pops Fernandez and Vina Morales are only a few of the mainstream talents he has created and staged concerts for. He has also directed Grand Opera (Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio for the U.P. Conservatory of Music 2005) and innumerable classical themed conciertos.

It is however for his work as a playwright that he is most renowned. His original work draw inspiration from Philippine History: AND ST. LOUIS LOVES DEM FILIPINOS, ISANG PAAGINIP NA FILI, ATANG: DULANG MAY MUSIKA, SUOR CLARA and FAKE. His newest work ANG HULING LAGDA NI APOLINARIO MABINI received its world premiere produced by Dulaang U.P..

He is a five time recipient of the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature, a two-time recipient of the Phil Theater Guild’s Gawad Buhay Award and a former fellow of the U.P. Creative Writing Center. In 2013 he was awarded the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas for Drama (in Filipino) by the Writer’s Union of the Philippines. He is also a journalist and writer as well as a creative consultant for GMA Network.
