While there are many light heart warming scenes, the story doesn’t gloss over the difficulties that families experience. There was a very honest and realistic portrayal baring the frustrations, confusion even the anger of family members coping with the care of a special needs child.

It also deals with the stigma associated with it. Awareness of medical facts is important for the public. For example children with Down Syndrome occurs in 1 out of 800-1000 children. Causes of which are still unknown. While alcohol, drug abuse even smoking may negatively affect pre natal care, pregnancy, the syndrome still occurs even without them. The notion of it being a ‘punishment’, karma or irresponsibility of the mother is wrong.

The fact that screenwriter Ronald Allan Habon also decided to make Nadia as a single mom represents a current trend among modern marriages. As a number of separations have risen over the years. Candy Pangilinan as Nadia, the mother of Vanvan has given her most touching and challenging performance to date. Candy has shown her maturity as an actress. While the moments of warmth and maternal care are expected, the more painful and private scenes where her thoughts are tempted to ‘give up’ are more real and powerful. Director Randolph Longjas shared that Candy’s performance came from somewhere honest. It comes from her real life experience as a mother whose child suffers from Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Longjas revealed that Candy was a calming presence for everyone on set. She was an acting coach, mother figure for her cast mates. In spite of the multiple functions Candy delivered exceptionally well as an actress and may lead to even more critically acclaimed roles in the future.

Mara Marasigan is another example of multiple functions in the role of Jessica, the childhood love of Acey Aguilar (Tano) the older brother of Vanvan. Mara is also the assistant director, taking care of nitty gritty details in filmmaking. She is a founding member of the EGG Theater Company, which recently produced SCHISM for FRINGE Festival. Mara was able to help the production by casting her father, theater and film director Dennis Marasigan for a cameo as the family doctor.

Two very interesting cameo appearances are TV5 stars Jasmine Curtis Smith and TJ Trinidad. Jasmine plays a VJ that Van van has a huge crush on. In real life Paolo Pingol is a huge admirer of the young actress who has been part of award winning Cinemalaya film TRANSIT. There were scenes also when TV5 talents TJ Trinidad and Jasmine were shown in the film shooting selfies with Vanvan.

Erlinda Villalobos is another theater and film veteran who plays the caring grandmother Ditas. In spite of the societal stigmas of a single mom she did not judge her daughter but was a supportive and loving figure.

Young Actors
The film has a wealth of impressive young actors not least of which is Jadford Dilanco (Kid Vanvan). Jad is the young version of Vanvan and was the product of an exhaustive search for director Randolph. Paolo Pingol was easier to find after his popular McDonald’s TVC was released back in 2013. Jad on the other hand has the similar charm and comfort in front of the camera as Paolo. Luiza Nikki Ellis as Older Vanvan’s love interest Nicole was also a good discovery for direk Randolph.

Isaac Aguirre as the young Tano – older brother of Vanvan had an interesting role. While he is ‘normal’, it was only natural that he bears some envy from the extra attention that their mom Nadia was showering on Vanvan. Isaac has already had a very good resume with SUNDALONG KANIN, which won special Jury award in Cinemalaya.

If there’s one thing that STAR NA SI VAN DAMME STALLONE could be criticized for is that it should show even more scenes that had special children function, which was one of its goals. Perhaps showing some activities apart from studying, like working long term could also be shown in a sequel. This movie will undoubtedly touch many hearts and educate a lot of minds as well.
