Undeniably for all Filipinos, BITUING WALANG NINGNING is an iconic film. The drama of the storyline is expected. What caught me off guard was how much I enjoyed the music. IF only to hear the familiar OPM hits performed well in the context of a story, it may even be considered better as a musical than a movie. Everyone remembers the famous line, “You’re nothing but a second rate copycat”. But there were so many hit songs from the soundtrack that have become Filipino classics.

Due to insistent public demand BITUING WALANG NINGNING (BWN) at Resort’s World Manila will have another run from October 8, 2015 through to January of 2016. Willy Cruz, one of the most prolific film scorers and composers produced so many memorable songs just from BWN alone: MAGANDANG GABI, SA DUYAN NG ‘YONG PAG-IBIG, PANGARAP NA BITUIN, SANA’Y MAGHINTAY ANG WALANG HANGGAN, KAMUSTA KA, INIT SA MAGDAMAG and title song BITUING WALANG NINGNING.

Willy Cruz has scored over 100 films and is in the FAMAS Hall of Fame.

Everyone admires the music composed by Willy Cruz who has scored countless more titles that have become classics. Just a few of the of the 100 films includes BUKAS LULUHOD ANG MGA TALA, INIT SA MAGDAMAG, SANA’Y WALA NANG WAKAS and MADRASTA.

An interesting side note is that Philippine Star columnist Baby Gil wrote lyrics for 2 BWN hits: SANA’Y MAGHINTAY ANG WALANG HANGGAN and KAMUSTA KA. She is also Vice President for Corporate Media of VIVA Ent., which produced this runaway hit and has worked with composers, Ryan Cayabyab and Louie Ocampo.

Not a lot of people are aware that BWN show director and playwright Freddie Santos is himself a composer and lyricist. He wrote and composed POINTS OF VIEW originally recorded by Joey Albert and is one of the additional songs. The other two additional songs that night were USAHAY from Cebu and ANG BOYFRIEND KONG BADUY. Director Freddie Santos also adapted the BWN screenplay by Orlando Nadres based on a comic series by Nerissa Cabral. Santos has also written songs for Jaya, Angelika and Vina Morales.

Willy Cruz has won the FAMAS Best Musical Score five times and consequently was elevated to the FAMAS Hall of Fame. In order to successfully execute these time loved hits by Cruz a similarly skillful musician and arranger has to be on board to execute them. Enter musical Director Rodel Colmenar, he commands no ordinary band but the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. The quality of a whole live orchestra adds that drama and depth that makes for a truly unforgettable musical experience. Rodel Colmenar said this particular musical is special for him because the music was made during an era where OPM was king.

That period is really what you see in the production design by Jo Tecson and costumes by Aksana Sidarava. There are big black rotary phones, gigantic hair on Edith (Menchu Luachengco Yulo’s character), shoulder pads and headbands during aerobic workouts. The 80s were more than just these nostalgic elements that bring you back. It was a time when OPM artists were no.1 for a great majority of Filipinos as it well should. Somehow, looking back at that time is important especially for the youth and the public in general to think about and see on stage. The music we make should always be no.1 for us all.

The famous names of the time are as enduring with their voice and talent. We should support them now as fervently as we did then: Nonoy Zuñiga, Basil Valdez, Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, Apo Hiking Society, Freddie Aguilar, Pilita Corales and Gary Valenciano, (many more).

For all the ALDUB fans of today Maine Mendoza has a lot of the facial features of a teenage Pops Fernandez. The difference is Pops was an amazing vocalist and dancer even as a teen and later on a seasoned actress. She even earned the title of Concert Queen opposite Martin Nievera her former hubby who is known as the Concert King. Who knows maybe Maine Mendoza will be able to display her talent musically and evolve from her dub smash shtick? Mendoza has a leg up on comedy, which I hope she’ll develop into real acting in the future.

Zsa zsa Padilla with guests Martin Nievera and Karylle recently held a concert at RWM’s Newport Performing Arts Theater. There are so many Pinoy artists you can catch live that are able to perform 80s and current hits at different venues in Resort’s World- Bar 360 and Bar 180. One of them is The Voice 2013 winner Mitoy Yonting who fronts the Aliw award winning band DRAYBERS. There’s PRIMO, SINGING SENSATIONS, SHAYNE AND THE BROWN UNION, JO & THE HOLY NOTES. Another The Voice S1 finalist Janice Javier can also be seen performing in Bar 360 on October 11. Check out the full schedule on http://www.rwmanila.com/shows-events.

Two leading OPM artists of the time actually have a cameo appearance of sorts in BWN, through a voice over. Menchu Lauchengco Yulo as Edith has a phone conversation with her (real life) brother Raymond Lauchengco and then Basil Valdez. Basil is perhaps one of the most familiar and iconic voices in original Pilipino music. Raymond Lauchengco is a singer in his own right and has also starred in some of the biggest Pinoy films and TV series: BAGETS, B@GETS: JUST GOT LUCKY, MMK. This is where the LED screens also play a role, as their photos are projected almost cinema wide during the phone conversation.

Music is one of the pervasive elements in nearly every field of entertainment if not art forms. Its not just the performers who gathered to celebrate the career and achievements of Jesse Lucas but also the writers, librettists, film and theater directors. This made Jesse Lucas in FULL RANGE concert last August 20, 2015 a truly special night at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino in CCP.

Sheila Francisco is an accomplished theater performer having had her own TRIPLE THREAT series of her own in 2014. Michael Williams and Bituin Escalante were the two other artists that year. She was the only Filipina to perform at the Royal National Theater in London for SOUTH PACIFIC which also ran at Resort’s World Manila this August. In 2002 Sheila performed in PAGPATAY KAY LUNA for Tanghalang Pilipino. That was where she first performed music by Jesse Lucas. She describes Lucas’ music, “They’re quite profound, very deep. The music itself tells the story. It’s so not difficult to get into it. I haven’t done that number in how many years. But the minute you hear those notes its like magic because it’s so deep and I so relate to it.”

She also shares her insights on the TRIPLE THREAT series at the CCP, “You know how wonderful it is now we have the composers in. In a sense they are triple threats. In theater language triple threat is dancing, singing and acting. It’s so wonderful we can take it further, deeper and expand the meaning of triple threat. Maybe next time it will be quadruple threat? It’s wonderful television, film and theater, its just amazing.”

She talks about the original casting and her own favorite songs from FULL RANGE, “The part of Franco (Laurel) was by Roy Rolloda who is now in Hong Kong. But he used to be very active in theater dito. And then yung kay Sweet (Plantado), that particular song was sung by 3 ladies, Kalila (Aguilos) was one of them. Lani Mabilangan was one of them and I used to play the third color of the flag. Favorite ko yung kay Ayen, MULING MAGMAMAHAL, NASAAN KA with Tex Ordoñez that beautiful suite with Bodjie Pascua TATAWIRIN NG PAG IBIG. Oh my God that was my favorite.”

Ayen Munji Laurel gave a riveting performance of MULING MAGAMAHAL from the musical DAAN NG KRUS. For Jesse, the musical was one of the early breaks given to him by librettist Jose Jeffrey Camañag and director Andre Tiangco.

Veteran of stage and television Bodjie Pascua gave an inspiring rendition of TATAWIRIN NG PAG IBIG from the musical SANDOSENANG SAPATOS. It was another memorable collaboration of Jesse Lucas with librettist Jose Jeffrey Camañag and director Andre Tiangco.

PEPE RIZAL, SA ISIP SALITA AT SA GAWA was a much-heralded musical in 2011. Written and directed by Floy Quintos, Jesse Lucas seemed like the most natural choice for music. The in demand concert and TV, theater director Floy Quintos has in turn graciously directed FULL RANGE. In the song A MI RETIRO (from PEPE RIZAL…), three of the top operatic voices were assembled: Rica Nepomuceno, Al Gatmaitan and Camille Lopez-Molina.

Jed Balsamo is the resident Musical Director for Ballet Philippines and countless productions in PETA and Tanghalang Pilipino. His experience as a member of the National Committee on Music at the National Commission of Culture and the Arts also gives him insight on the importance of the TRIPLE THREAT series especially for composers, “It’s a good thing CCP considered the composers na i-feature for Triple Threats. Kasi there’s is a dearth of relevant Filipino music. Contemporary Philippine music whether it’s in theater, film, dance even. Kaya through this Triple threats nagkaroon ng avenue composers na marecognize, for the public also na ma realize na ‘ay si ano pala gumawa noon’. Kadalasan na papansin lang the dancer or the singer or the actor.”

Balsamo has his own insights on each of the featured artists of TRIPLE THREAT, “Si Jesse Lucas naman siya yung tipo na di nagpapasikat. Eto lang ako this is me subtle pero effective pa rin. Pagdating kay Vince unorthodox, unpredictable, baliw. Si Rony with his Broadway background we can expect to hear magical things from him. Iba iba maganda rin ang combination ng Triple threats ngayon. They have their own strengths sigurado ako yan ang papakita nila sa series nila.”

Lucas’ composition for Philippine Ballet Theater’s DARANGEN NI BANTUGEN resulted in a rousing collaboration between two prestigious dance companies. The Phil Ballet Theater was joined by the U.E. Silanganan Dance Troupe choreographed by no less than Gener Caringal.

Perhaps one of the most touching inspirations for Jesse Lucas is his composition TAWAG based on a poem by the late Maningning Miclat. Lucas was inspired to write compositions of music after reading the book of poetry by Maningning, TAWAG is just one of them. Maningning’s sister Banaue Miclat-Janssen provides the vocals for this song. Banaue is herself an accomplished performer as actress and singer. She has performed for TP and Dulaang Pilipino. Abroad she has been part of productions in Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center in Manhattan, FRINGE NY and off-broadway productions.

Being able to watch the FULL RANGE concert was true privilege. Celebrating the art, music of Jesse Lucas. I suspect Lucas will still be able to produce more of his memorable work in the years to come.

By show time however, her abs were ripped. She credited the extra aerobic exercises before each rehearsal and play date. She also made sure not to eat a meal immediately before each performance.

What really convinced me that Leading Lady had a sexier look was one particular photo that I took of Red Concepcion as Itak-Atak. I’m sure the blocking was purely coincidental along with my lower angle from which I was shooting. I last saw Red in Resort’s World Manila’s production of Priscilla Queen of The Desert as the Gayest of Gays: Felicia. Here he is now playing a macho super villain Itak Atak.

The photo I took which had a PURELY accidental angle, seemed like his mouth was on Kim Molina’s (Viva) generous bosom. I’m sure it was unintentional for ALL parties. But was sexy nevertheless. Itak Atak’s pose of holding his Itak directly at crotch level was not accidental at all though.

Of course everyone’s raving about Markki Stroem (Leading Man) and Bituin Escalante’s (Mely) intimate scenes as well. Theater and music fans who have been admiring Bito’s vocals and acting are so happy with her leading role for this musical. She’s equally gratified having a young hunk in Markki as her leading man.

In the final group shot I caught Bito teasing co star Nar Cabico that she has hot scenes with Markki. The role also allowed Markki to show off his abs and muscled torso.

If costumes don’t reveal skin they’re skin tight, body-hugging leather. KUNG PAANO AKO NAGING LEADING LADY displays the penchant and skill of director Chris Martinez for humor. The wildly creative imagination of Set and Costume designer Tuxqs Rutaquio successfully brought to life characters created by Carlo Vergara.

The world knows  her PDI column and alter ego: Sea Princess. If there’s anything that Tessa Prieto Valdes is known for it’s a flair for the dramatic. This time she gets to use her persona as a diwata (shoe fairy) for Tanghalang Pilipino’s production of SANDOSENANG SAPATOS. It runs from December 7-15, 2013 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The musical is based on a children’s book by Dr. Luis Gatmaitan, adapted for the stage by playwright Layeta Bucoy and director Tuxqs Rutaquio. Renowned musician Noel Cabangon and leading musical director Jed Balsamo both composed the music.

SANDOSENANG SAPATOS is the story of how Susie (Trixie Esteban) who can’t walk in real life is able to walk and dance in her dreams. Her shoes come to life as people who dance and play with her in a fantasy world.

Producers saw the wisdom in casting Tessa as the leap from Sea Princess to Diwata is not that big a stretch. Tessa after all, won GMA 7’s CELEBRITY DUETS back in 2007. She has that enthusiasm and love for music that shines in each performance that got her more fans. Her winning duet was TRUE COLORS with Joey Generoso of SIDE A, beating out Hayden Kho with Jay Durias and Jessica Buenvacz with JAYA.

Tessa is also one of the leading endorsers, especially in the A& B market so it will also help ticket sales, as her casting will bring in audiences. TP Artistic Director Nanding Josef was able to appeal to Tessa who is also a member of the Tanghalang Pilipino board.

Passion carries her through even if she may not be the next Lea Salonga. Looking at Tessa on stage the similarities are closer to Imelda Marcos. Their love of music and performance can only be exceeded by their love for shoes. Both are considered to be fashion icons in their own right and are definitely trendsetters. Imelda with the identifiable Filipina terno and Tessa was the most visible cosplayer even before the term was coined by today’s youth. Both of them have that show stopper mentality that people have come to identify with their flamboyant personalities.

Tessa reiterated the cause the musical supports, “I’m so happy to support this production. I love shoes and it’s a really great cause. They’re so talented. If it’s just a small part with no singing, I got conned into singing.” The CCP during the performances accepts shoe donations for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga and St. Francis Learning School for the Aetas.

Of course Sea Princess had her own costume prepared for the musical. Hollywood based Filipino designer Rocky Gathercole created an elaborate apple green ensemble. “I got so engrossed with the concept of the shoes. My shoes, my hat, Rocky did my costume if you look at my headgear it has shoes all the way from Cebu.”

Having agreed to take on the challenge of singing again, she threw herself wholeheartedly and even hired a personal voice coach. Vocal training and rehearsals amounted to practice of over a month. Hazel Maranan, the ‘lead’ shoe fairy said, “I’m so proud of her. When we started this she was so afraid. She’s not comfortable with Tagalog and she doesn’t sing professionally. But we helped her. We helped each other to get the right tone and timing. Her confidence grew with each performance. There were so many times when she was able to do it all herself and proved to everyone she could do it well.” There are a total of 3 Shoe Fairies: Hazel Maranan, Raquel Pareño and Tessa.

Instead of talking about herself Tessa was more comfortable giving praise to the lead star Trixie Esteban, “She is so talented. I have an understudy for my role, which is just a part. She doesn’t have one. She’s done all the 16 shows and her voice is so powerful. She is just God’s gift for Tanghalang Pilipino. We’re happy to have her. She’s only 14 with an angelic voice. I’ve played six of the shows and I’m still crying while I’m on stage! I’m trying not to cry and get involved so much. I can’t deliver my lines because I’m crying.”

Tessa’s connections with the fashion world also helped her tap designer James Reyes as costume designer, “What’s so incredible about it was in spite of the tight budget he was able to get all the costumes minus mine. It was so wonderful that he got the concept of having all the elements of the different shoes whether its velvet, maong whatever. He incorporated the design. If you look at the details he was able to make giant shoelaces and everything. Wonderful!”

Whether she’s Sea Princess or Diwata ng Sapatos, she has her own style of winning people over, “I have a problem with not engaging the audience. You’re supposed to be just focusing on the actors. I gotta say I love the fans.”

The muses were an enduring theme in the ancient world. For the Roman scholar Varro there are only three Muses. According to Wikipedia, “one who is born from the movement of water, another who makes sound by striking the air, and a third who is embodied only in the human voice. They were Melete or Practice, Mneme or Memory and Aoide or Song.” Later myths expanded the three to nine.

In the Philippines, we have three legendary muses of our own: Lea Salonga, Cecile Licad and Lisa Macuja. Their recent concert THE LEGENDS AND THE CLASSICS ENCORE at the CCP exhibited them as the world-class talents that have been celebrated here and abroad. They are artists who have become muses; an inspiration to generations of singers, dancers and musicians.

For too many centuries women have been being muses to artists. I wanted to be the muse, I wanted to be the wife of the artist, but I was really trying to avoid the final issue — that I had to do the job myself.” ― Anaïs Nin

CECILE LICAD —music when performed with true love and emotion can easily be seen through the face, Licad is prime example of this. It seems to flow from her. She gives musical director Gerard Salonga a quick glance and suddenly she is possessed by the melodies. Notes seem to pass from her fingers to the piano keys. The most complex and difficult pieces through her mastery of it, through her interpretation come out as emotion: PAQUITA GRANDE DISVERTISSEMENT, GOTTSCHALK and RACHMANINOFF-RHAPSODY ON A THEME OF PAGANINI. Her right arm would swing upward and stay there as if waving good-bye as a point to end a piece.

Licad is more than just the most celebrated piano prodigy from the Philippines. As a 19 year old she was then the youngest to ever win the prestigious Leventritt Gold Medal. It used to be a competition for violinists and pianists but evolved into an award for the most promising musical talent. The Leventritt Foundation in New York established it 1939 in honor of Edgar M. Leventritt, lawyer and patron of music. According to the New York Times, the award has launched many careers: “Among the winners have been Eugene Istomin, Alexis Weissenberg, Gary Graffman, Van Cliburn, John Browning, Malcolm Frager, Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman.” Licad’s facebook site also lists her performances with the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and National Symphony. The Legends had no less than the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra.

LISA MACUJA doesn’t move on stage, she floats. The power of legs and thighs in every leap is seen as grace. Every emotion on her face belies the pain, the strain on her feet and ankles. We were all mesmerized with Lisa Macuja and her partner Rudy De Dios in PROKOFIEV: Romeo & Juliet.

As a photographer, I am fascinated with dancers. They easily convey stories through the use of their bodies and faces. No wonder some of the most famous actors have a dancing background, John Travolta and the late Patrick Swayze. Lisa is the pinnacle of ballet in the Philippines not just as a performer but also as teacher. Ballet Manila has become a rich pool of dancers as seen in Legends. Ballet Manila’s strength as a company was particularly evident in the elaborate choreography of PAQUITA GRANDE DISVERTISSEMENT.

Ryan Cayabyab originally wrote the opening number/song of NAIS KO and became a signature hit of singer Basil Valdez. The song speaks about the desire to create, to experience life, to travel. Both the music and lyrics capture that zest for life that these three legendary performers have personified. Lea Salonga’s vocals, Lisa Macuja interpreting through dance and Cecile Licad on piano for that one song was unforgettable. Having them together on one stage is certainly a dream come true.

And that song was just the beginning. Another combination, the trio of having the best pianist in Licad with cellist Francisco Llorin and Lisa Macuja performing the remarkable DYING SWAN (LE CARNAVAL DES ANUMAUX) proved to be a magical experience. The audience was so moved that an ovation could not be stopped even at the middle of the concert. A stellar combination such as that may never be replicated again.

LEA SALONGA shone with her Broadway selections most especially with FOR GOOD and DEFYING GRAVITY from WICKED. The CCP will also be the same venue for the hit WICKED on January 2014. Other songs may have become a staple from Lea: I DREAMED A DREAM and ON MY OWN from Les Mis and MEMORIES for Cats. I’D GIVE MY LIFE FOR YOU from Miss Saigon was also particularly meaningful for Lea. The Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo’s stage was where she first learned and performed the song during the audition for the show that launched her international career.

Lea’s voice has that sincere, clear and resonant quality which was perfect for the selection of Michel Legrand compositions: WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?, WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND, PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME? Legrand’s work doesn’t just deal with love but regret and loss. Again it’s the emotion that Lea is able to put into the song that moves audiences. Especially in Filipino classics like HAHANAPIN KO composed by Jose Mari Chan and lyrics by Jimmy Santiago.

As grand finale they chose SANA’Y WALA NANG WAKAS written and composed by Willy Cruz made famous by Sharon Cuneta. Sharon has a new show with Ogie Alcasid called, “The Mega and the Songwriter” Sunday 9pm on TV5. As wonderful as Sharon’s voice is Lea Salonga elevated the song to even greater heights. Cecile Licad, impeccably played the song which was composed to be played on the piano. Lisa again interpreted the song through ballet, floating, moving becoming the song through her body.

Before singing their encore song of WHAT I DID FOR LOVE, Lea hugged Lisa saying, “We’re bigger than whatever heartache and disappointment that may come our way. And here we are now standing before you, women, mothers, artists and dreamers still. One day we may have to leave the spotlight some of us sooner than others. She’s retiring na kasi (hugs Lisa). We will be watching from the sidelines we will be teaching and coaching. One day we may not be able to offer you the fruits of our love as we do now. When that day comes we will know that our lives have been incredibly blessed and absolutely no regrets.”

Singer and acclaimed theater actress May Bayot currently plays Elsa in HIMALA by TOUCHWORKX productions. Catch the musical version of the Nora Aunor film classic’s 10th Anniversary run at PETA from March 15-March 24, 2013.

According to Direk Soxie Topacio, Nora Aunor herself after seeing the original run in 2003, said the songs written were ‘not for her’. Ate Guy’s voice is more honed for pop. The musical vocals, for lack of a better term, are operatic. Composer and Musical Director Vincent De Jesus intentionally did not want the music to be boxed into the usual pattern of a musical. De Jesus co wrote HIMALA also with legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

Nora Aunor herself admitted, the songs were not written for her, whose voice is more for pop music.

The role for Elsa in the musical necessitated the vocal prowess of May Bayot. Other roles are equally renowned vocally: Dulce (Aling Saling), Isay Alvarez (Nimia) and Cynthia Culig-Guico (Chayong). Isay Alvarez also stars in the upcoming KATY with Dulce, Epy Quizon and Gian Magdangal at the MERALCO Theater this month of May. May Bayot will also star in Tanghalang Pilipino’s production of STAGESHOW, the last masterpiece of playwright/actor/director Mario O’Hara this August.

May Bayot comes from an illustrious musical family. Her parents: Benjamin Bayot (operatic tenor), Esperanza Dimalanta (coloratura soprano) taught all their children to sing. Sister Lani Misalucha is now one of the more popular singers in Las Vegas, Karlyn is a TV actress while brothers Novi and Osi play the guitar and piano respectively.

May revealed one of the biggest challenges in her life, “Ako marami akong pinagdaanan. Na stroke ako four years ago as in kalahati ng katawan ko left side affected. I’m still dealing with it may na tira siya e. Hindi na talaga magiging 100% ever. Sa akin it’s very relevant it’s very close to my heart because totoo yung message na ang himala nasa puso ng tao.”

For her she is living proof that miracles do happen, “If you want to find miracles you can see it everyday. May ginagawa ang Diyos na miracle every day. Yung buhay ko lang everyday is already a miracle. Ako, prognosis sakin I will not be able to walk properly. Di nako makaka function. After 3 months naka sampa uli ako sa banda ko. Naka gawa ako ng play so its paniniwala and you have to couple it with hard work. God makes miracles everyday. At the same time you are a partner with him making your own miracle.”

HIMALA the musical for May is one of many Filipino produced works that we as audiences should make sure to watch and support, “Gusto kong makita ng mga tao na magagaling tayong Pinoy na gumawa ng mga ganito. Di tayo kelangan pumunta sa Hong Kong para manood ng ‘Lion King’ o kung ano. Of course totally dfferent kind of entertainment but bago yon tayo muna. Kung di tayo tayo magtutulungan pano naman tayo ma appreciate ng ibang tao?”

Added to the original main cast are Viva Voce and the University of Santo Tomas Singers Alumni. Director Soxie Topacio said the expanded chorus was something that previous versions of the musical did not have. The first song “ Ang Eclipse at Ang Aparisyon” had a haunting effect when sung by Viva Voce and the UST Singer’s Alumni. They also added to the crowds and multitudes on stage, which the Film version was known for.

Legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee wrote the now classic film by Ishmael Bernal starring Nora Aunor. He spoke about the effect that the film and story itself has had , “Unang una HIMALA has lived for 30 years already and mukhang mabubuhay pa siya ng matagal. Whether you like it or not part na nung culture natin yung HIMALA e. Part na ng culture natin si Elsa. Part ng buhay natin yung topic ng play whether it’s a film or a stage production.”

He was all praises for this latest version of the musical by Director Soxie Topacio and Vincent de Jesus, “Its not really a full production it’s a concert so mas mabilis siya. Yung transitions mas smooth. The performance was really powerful. Sina Dulce sina May, si Isay very heartfelt yung performances nila.”

Lee however stated that the musical has advantages over the film, “Each production na ririnig  mo yung iringan nila, yung paghinga nila because its live. Na ririnig mo yung daing nila, na aamoy mo yung pawis nila, na kikita mo yung tears nila buhay na buhay sa harap mo. Unlike sa film, eto totoo. In away it’s more real.”

Lee relishes the unpredictability in theater, “The other thing is pag pinanuood mo siya, you know what’s going to happen at the same time you don’t know what’s going to happen. These are live performances anything can happen. Pwedeng iba ngayon si May Bayot, medyo iba bukas medyo iba sa susunod. Sakin it’s a very exciting thing.  No two performances are the same and thank God there’s multiplicity ng performances. Thank God you have Nora Aunor! Thank God you have May Bayot and thank God there will be other people who will perform that role in their own way na equally splendid. So masarap for a writer and HIMALA na bubuhay pa ulit ulit si Elsa sa iba ibang pagkatao. Sakin that’s more than enough kabayaran sa lahat ng hirap sa pag create ng material.”

The musical was also able to compensate for the loss of the multitudes on screen, “Parang opera sa akin it works. One good thing in the stage production, which I thought, would be difficult, sa pelikula isang malaking character yung masses e. The crowd all throughout it kept growing. Dito meron din siya. You can feel all the stages nung buhay ng community na nagsusuffer from belief to disbelief to disillusion and so yon nan dun din.”

May Bayot as Elsa has always performed up to the task of the role that made Nora Aunor a critically acclaimed actress. Lee goes on, “She’s very good. She was good then when it first came out. She’s still very good now. You can feel the pain. Painful in a positive sense, painful performance yung rendition niya. And ang complex complex ng HIMALA niya. You can feel all the facets ng emotion niya, pagkatao niya the doubts, the insecurities, the desire to be immortal, the vanity. At the same time the fragility na mimix niya lahat yon. And the voice, the voice is very pure.”

Nora Aunor (seen here in the film version) was more ‘pure and transcendental’ compared to May Bayot who was ‘complex, with all facets of emotion’ according to legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

Nora Aunor (seen here in the film version) was more ‘pure and transcendental’ compared to May Bayot who was ‘complex, with all facets of emotion’ according to legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

When asked to compare May Bayot with Nora Aunor, Lee said it would be very unfair for both. Being in two different mediums its difficult to compare especially since the film was not a musical. “Describing each, Nora was very pure and transcendental. The purity is there, the movements the face, every bit of her being nandun. Ang pure niya she’s one whole mystic being. On the other hand si May, without comparing or putting either one down, she’s complex. She’s left and right, black and white, rough and polished. I don’t want to compare because the film was asking for something else than the stage production.

The style and presence of both actors were different, “Si May is a leading being in the production. Si Nora was leading in a pure way, which is also good. That’s what the film set out to do. The set was very minimalist. Yon ang philsophical inclination ng film so tama lang doon e. Iba naman ang pinupuntahan so I don’t want to compare. And I hope that you don’t compare the two to be fair to both. As a writer pareho silang nagbigay ng flesh at kaluluwa dun sa pagkatao ni Elsa.”  Sponsors include: PLDT, UCPB, THEATER ACTOR’S GUILD Philippines, ARMY NAVY Burger + Burrito, LUBE.ph, Business World, High Life, HerWord.com

The success of Resorts World’s “King and I” has etched Leo Valdez as the lead role in the minds of most fans. Ticket sales have already convinced producers to extend the run to December 30, 2012. Leo Valdez, however was King Mongkut long before anyone ever thought of producing “King and I” locally. Physically he already sported the bald look for years. Vocally its difficult to think of anyone having a more imposing resume.

One of the roles he is most known for, the Engineer in Miss Saigon matches the accent and almost the nationality. Miss Saigon’s setting of Vietnam is practically the neighbor of Thailand; setting of what was then the kingdom of Siam in ‘King and I.’ The facial features and the accents of the two countries in speaking English are not exactly the same but is similar.

Seeing him live in CCP’s 40th anniversary celebration in March 2009 was really remarkable. Covering that event was one of the early assignments I had, as Entertainment staff of Manila Bulletin. Being there to see that celebration was definitely a privilege that I won’t forget. It was one of those performances that remain in your mind long after the night ended. It had one of the most complete, resounding and longest standing ovations I had ever witnessed.

You know you’ve seen something special when it makes you really proud not just of the performances but of our Filipino culture and heritage. The Cultural Center of the Philippines is the epicenter of nearly all art forms in our country.  So they had to think up of a single show that would represent the prestige and honor of that title.

The best dancers, singers, actors spanning various genres were there. Lisa Macuja Elizalde enthralled audiences with White Swan Pax De Deux with partner Nazer Salgado of Ballet Manila. Excerpts from the best performances of resident companies like: Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theater, The Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group and the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company were also seen.

The actors of Tanghalang Pilipino, Gantimpala Theater Foundation, reprised the most memorable plays and musicals. Jed Madela and Bo Cerrudo sang the classic ‘Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika’ which won the Metro Pop Grand Prize in 1978. Cerrudo incidentally is also in the King Mongkut role for Resort’s World’s “King and I”. It was such an incredible array of artists. The list is truly long and prestigious. Finding the right person to sing the grand finale to cap this unearthly show was an almost impossible task.

To top it all, Leo Valdez came out in his trademark ‘bald’ look, foo manchu moustache, belting out his hit “Magsimula Ka”. The song written by Gines Tan won third prize at the 4th Metro Pop Fest established by now Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos. Valdez performed the song that launched his career in the festival that discovered Freddie Aguilar, Hajji Alejandro, Celeste Legaspi and even composer Ryan Cayabyab. After covering so many concerts, musical events, I have yet to see an ovation that would equal what happened after that song, to be fair after the assortment of talent that night.

“Magsimula Ka” was the crescendo to all of the best that CCP had to offer. The message of the song is to inspire one to create. Yes it is the 40th anniversary, but this is just the beginning. We’re going to go on. The lyrics say it all, “Magsimula ka, pilitin at tuklasin ang hanap…Madanas man ang maraming hirap…Ang mithiin mo pag naging ganap…Langit ng pagsisikap iyo nang malalasap”. In this time of economic crisis, the words have more significance. It’s an inspiring message of creative excellence from the CCP that will continue no matter what the current challenges are.

When you watch Leo as King Mongkut in “King and I” he easily inhabits the role. Although vocally, one gets the feeling that the Rogers and Hammerstein songs don’t really stretch his range. The songs may be ‘too easy’ for someone who has such a powerful and operatic voice. Comparing Valdez to one of the most iconic actors of all time who made the film version famous, Yul Brynner is not a disservice to either one.

Brynner’s advantage is his macho, almost overpoweringly strong commanding presence on screen, which Valdez may in some ways duplicate. Yul’s bald look and bearing made you believe he’s King. But vocally there’s no way that Brynner could compete with Valdez. In a previous interview with Ida del Mundo of Phil. Star, Valdez confessed that he took the best parts of both Yul Brynner and Chow Yun Fat’s interpretation of King Mongkut and then made it his own.

Filling the role of Anna also had to be strong in order to stand up to someone like Valdez as an actor. Otherwise she’s going to disappear performance wise. Monique Wilson more than made up for this, who also used to be a lead actress for Miss Saigon. There’s so much amazing chemistry between Leo and Monique that you can’t help but fall in love with them as a couple. What “King and I” has done is to create the perfect role and show for Leo Valdez to be crowned as the ‘Rightful Ruler of the Stage.’
