Finally, the Manila City government has begun the vaccination of the A4 category, June 8, 2021. So far, succeeding days have been allotted. June 9 onwards BUT for a list of vaccination sites and verification of schedule log on to Manila Mayor Isko Moreno aka Yorme’s fb.

The malls opened are: Lucky Chinatown Mall, Robinson’s Place Ermita, SM Manila City Hall and SM San Lazaro.

Make sure to log on in order to verify changes in schedule which may change on a daily basis. Everyone who wants to be vaccinated who either live or work in Manila have to register in www.manilacovid19vaccine.ph And once registered, you have to bring a print out of the QR code, or bring the image file on your phone on the vaccination date.

BUT who qualifies to be in the A4 category?

To make things simple, if you can produce a company ID with a Manila address, they will most probably honor it. This is based on a quote from Yorme himself in an interview in ANC. The industries in the A4 category can vary from food manufacturing to logistics. For a full list from rappler log on here.

Cold Storage

The advantage of going to the malls for your vaccination are obvious to most if not all Filipinos. The VACCINE NATION program began in late March. And it prioritized, understandably: A1 (Medical Frontliners), A2 (Senior Citizens) and A3 ( People with Comorbidities). But most sites if not all were in Public schools here in Manila.

In several places elsewhere, they immediately tapped malls: Cebu, Antipolo, Tuge Vaccinate in Robinsons and SM Malls

Because Malls have large airconditioned areas that can be critical for the (temporary) storage and distribution of vaccines. The Sputnik V and Pfizer vaccines are sensitive to sunlight and heat.

Nurse Supervisor Gloria Inocencio, headed the vaccination process in Robinsons Place Manila. She was able to give a thorough explanation of the Sputnik vaccination last June 8.

“Sputnik is very sensitive. Manufacture niyan 0° to negative 80° degrees Celsius. Kasi lahat ng mga vaccine iba iba ang kanilang mga literature at temperature. Ang Sinovac plus 2° to 8° degrees Celsius. Sputnik 0° to negative 80° degrees Celsius parang Pfizer din yan. Kaya siguro kaya kami ginawa dito dahil malamig. Kasi hindi ito pwede sa sunlight. We avoid direct exposure kung di masisira ang vaccine. Ang second dose nito pagbalik ng 21 days. Kaya nga June 29 and second dose namin.”

Although the second dose already has a set date, it can also be earlier. Those who have received their first dose will receive a text message from the Manila COVID 19 system. Which may or may not indicate an earlier day for the second dose.

Malls as the Better Venue

Nurse Gloria noted that once the vaccine is taken out, it must immediately be administered, “Kaya nga na sabi ko kelangan malamig. Ma maintain, ma control namin ang temperature. SO kaya dito sa mall malamig. DI kami pwede sa vaccination school kasi mainit doon yung temperature. At least dito malamig. Kasi pag na turn namin yan within 2 hours, naka lagay niyan dapat iinject. Direct from here, direct to the patient. So we can maintain the temperature. Pag na expose na yan sa sunlight or mainit, sira na ang vaccine natin.”

But its not just the air-conditioning that makes malls the ideal site for vaccinations. Their wide interior spaces are also ideal. Mall Management have the experience of dealing with large crowds and being able to keep them comfortable.

Robinson’s Manila Mall Operations Manager, Malou Rhon was able to enumerate these advantages, “As soon as we heard there will be vaccination again in the mall. We got  the call from the office of the mayor. We prepared space here. As you can see there are chairs, tables, of course aircon and well lighted. We also made sure the space has been disinfected. And communication with our team as well.”

Security personnel are also critical, Rhon said,  “We have designated security to maintain the peace and order.  And also yung entrance na gagamitin namin kung saan sila papasok. As well as the perimeter outside. These were the preparations we have undertaken when we found out about the vaccination for A4.”

Patience according to her is necessary from all the vaccinees. When dealing with large crowds everyone involved needs to be more patient, “ Part of our preparation nag lagay kami ng security.  We also coordinated with our barangays to help us doon sa pila sa perimeter area.  There will be complaints. There will be long lines.  As long as we maintain our objective to manage, to implement social distancing, maintain security and seek help of barangay.”

Vaccination and the Economy

Of course vaccination prevents us as individuals from getting sick from COVID. Not  everyone however, may be aware of how it impacts our economy. Rhon explained how vaccination will positively affect us as a whole, “This will give assurance on the consumers part. Mawawala yung takot ko.  To deal with essential workers. Freely I can go, eat at restos because  I know they have been vaccinated. Makakatulong sa ating ekonomiya, mawawala na yung fear of going out. Mabubuhay uli yung ekonomiya natin. Once everyone has been vaccinated.”

To this end there have been more Robinsons Malls that are also vaccination sites according to Rhon, “Yes marami itong Robinsons malls na nagiging vaccination site. To name a few Robinsons Novaliches, Robinsons Malabon.   We also have Forum (Robinsons)  I think, Robinson’s Galleria and Robinsons Magnolia.  Robinsons Mall is open for this kind of activity  in support of our government.”

Most people may be more familiar with all the malls mentioned above but FORUM may not be familiar to all. To quote the official Robinson’s site:

Forum Robinsons is a specialty mall within Cybergate, a modern business and residential complex at the corner of EDSA and Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong City. Formerly Robinsons Place Pioneer, it was repositioned as a cyber lifestyle mall to better serve the needs of the tech generation, a large concentration of whom resides and works in the Cybergate community and neighboring cities.

Forum Robinsons highlights information technology product categories such as computers, cellphones and other mobile/wireless gadgets, digital cameras, and audio-video and computer gaming equipment. Complementing this mix are four anchor stores, four state-of-the-art cinemas including one 3D cinema, and a host of satisfying shopping, dining, amusement and service outlets. SM Cinemas Now Showing Vaccinations

Among the mall vaccination sites mentioned, SM Malls may be the ones that are the most comfortable. They managed to achieve this by using their cinemas. There are several phases of the vaccination: screening, counselling, vaccination and then monitoring and observation. And because the cinemas are inter-connected or have exits that lead to the next cinema, this makes them ideal for each separate phase.

And it was also in their site where they have an extra desk called VERIFICATION. This is the desk one goes to immediately after getting vaccinated. They verify if your information has been inputted in the system, thereby making sure that the first dose has been given. This is just another fail safe procedure to help make sure you have the right information, especially for your vaccination ID.

Creative Lucky Chinatown Mall

Initially there were some problems with a lot of people lining up for the vaccinations. But now they have already ironed it out. And for Lucky Chinatown Mall goers, it can really be worth the trip. Being in the heart of Binondo and near the commercial district of Divisoria as well, the mall taps into the rich history and culture of the area. After the vaccination they can visit exhibits and displays unique to the Megaworld Lifestyle branded mall.

There is an enormous Philippine flag made of hopia and mooncake. This was made in celebration of Philippine Independence day June 12. There’s also a walkway in the 3rd level Annex A, beside KUYA J. The walkway is covered in lanterns made by Hope Christian Highschool students with a Filipino-Chinese Friendship theme.

Another motivation for everyone to get vaccinated is the much anticipated opening of the BINONDO CHINATOWN MUSEUM at the 4th level of Lucky Chinatown Mall. It was originally set to open June 8 but has been moved  until quarantine restrictions will be lifted.

Free Vaccines

Nurse Supervisor Gloria Inocencio gave sage advice to all those hesitant to get vaccinated now. She happens to be the Supervisor for District 5 (my home district of Paco), Manila Health Department. And she’s had about 27 years in service.

The urgency is that the vaccine now is free and later on whether its booster shots, may no longer be subsidized, “Nako kayo po kelangan magpa bakuna na kayo habang meron tayong bakuna. Kasi kelangan kelangan natin ito para tayo ay ma-iligtas sa COVID-19. Wag kayong matakot. I myself second dose nako, lahat  kami. Kahit ano pang brand yan pwede. Ang impurtante ay vaccinated kayo. Sputnik man yan, Sinovac yan, Astra, Pfizer wag kayong mamili. Kung anung available grab it. Kasi libre. Susunod niyan may bayad na.”

“My husband isn’t coping. War leaves a mark. He’s a wonderful man. I want him back,” said Pattie (Nicole Kidman). She was describing the mental state of Eric (Colin Firth) after he tried to stab a debt collector in his home. It was a whirlwind romance for Pattie and Eric. She fell for his passion for trains, which they both shared. After the wedding, it didn’t take long for her to realize something was terribly wrong.

Jeremy Irvine (Young Eric Lomax) was a radio operator in the British forces. THE RAILWAY MAN can be seen in Megaworld Lifestyle Malls such as Resort’s World Manila, Eastwood Malls, and Lucky Chinatown Mall starting September 24, 2014.

The story is based on an autobiography of the same title written by Eric Lomax as part of the British Regiment in Singapore. When the Japanese captured the Commonwealth territory in 1942, Lomax and other engineers were brought north. They were forced to help plan the very ambitious Siam-Burma railway the Japanese had intended to construct connecting Southeast Asia to China.

Starting September 24, 2014 the historical epic THE RAILWAY MAN is exclusively shown in Megaworld Lifestyle Malls such as Resort’s World Manila, Eastwood Malls, and Lucky Chinatown Mall. Lead stars include Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman Stellan Skarsgaard, Jeremy Irvine and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The reason the scale of the Siam-Burma railroad had never been done before was the incredible logistical challenges. “An army of slaves” was necessary to complete the monumental task, cutting through mountains and difficult terrains through jungle and swamp. The Japanese had to be brutal and cruel beyond belief to complete the task. This was the reality faced by a young Eric Lomax and his comrades.

The film jumps from the early 1980’s when Pattie and Eric met and fell in love to his memories of the war. Eric Lomax was also made consultant to the film but passed away before it was completed. The film is a touching example of how forgiveness and reconciliation is possible in spite of the terrible atrocities of war. Stellan Skarsgaard is the older Finlay who enlightens Pattie of Eric’s condition. They were in the same unit together and he personally witnessed the ingenuity and courage that Eric displayed during those horrific times. Young Eric Lomax is played by Jeremy Irvine who became known for playing Albert Naracott in WAR HORSE directed by Steven Spielberg. He can also be seen in thriller THE REACH with Michael Douglas. In 2015 Irvine is in THE WORLD MADE STRAIGHT a civil war piece with Noah Wiley and Haley Joel Osment.

MARKOVA: COMFORT GAY / SUNDALONG KANIN

Throughout RAILWAY MAN, Finlay was talking about an unspeakable torture that Eric had gone through alone apart from the unit. This became a central element that kept on repeating itself. Naturally as the film progresses there was a deliberate plan to keep this secret until the denouement or even the climax to heighten the suspense.

Eric Quizon played the young Markova.

Here in the Philippines as viewers there were a number of tortures or even atrocities that were going through our mind. Our history is similar in a sense where, our country was also invaded and ruled over by the Japanese forces during World War II.

Dolphy was both lead actor and producer in MARKOVA COMFORT GAY.

One of the landmark films about atrocities committed during that era was MARKOVA: COMFORT GAY (2000). It starred the most known and critically acclaimed Filipino actor comedian: Dolphy. His real life sons Epi and Eric Quizon played younger versions of his character. It was also similarly based on a real person; Walter Dempster Jr. aka Walterina Markova. Senator Loren Legarda played herself as a reporter interviewing Markova. The film is about a group of homosexual performers being used as ‘comfort gays’. Where Japanese soldiers would line up to rape them, which lasted for several years. It was a landmark film in a sense that it dealt with the issue of comfort women, which really happened at the time, and the fact it was gay men who were also being raped. Most recently the theme of comfort women was again dealt with in the Cinemalaya film SUNDALONG KANIN (2014).

Unspeakable Atrocity

SO in our minds we were gearing up for the possibility that it was THIS unspeakable atrocity that Eric Lomax endured, in the case of RAILWAY MAN. Especially since he specifically could not talk about the torture with his wife. Needless to say, it was another kind of torture that viewers would have to discover through the course of the film.

The theme of a homosexual abuse/rape however neatly fit every piece of the puzzle. You wouldn’t expect Eric Lomax to openly discuss it given his extremely conservative Scottish upbringing. There was also a special relationship that developed between Eric and Kempetai agent Takashi Nagase played by Japanese star Hiroyuki Sanada. SO that would have added another dimension TO that relationship. Sometimes what is NOT explicitly said in a book or film becomes more interesting food for thought.

PHILPOP Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan said, “Nation building has become an integral part of our mission as a business. Together with our group of companies, the PhilPOP Music Fest Foundation aims to support this nation building effort through music in our society today. There has been a detectable need to initiate an undertaking as significant as PhilPOP to remind people where our music would and should be headed.”

The songwriter’s themselves however are more often than not accomplished singers as well. Personally I’m hoping the songwriters get to show their talents in interpreting their own songs as well or jamming with their more famous counterparts. Johnoy Danao for example who wrote KUNG DI MAN interpreted by Ney Dimaculangan earned the SMART Audience Choice Award. Danao is himself a YouTube sensation getting rave reviews from fans and music critics alike. His podcasts are among the most popular among Filipino artists, which has earned him the moniker “Philippines’ Best Kept Secret”.

The Philippine Pop Music Fest aims to give Original Pilipino Music a boost by discovering the best songwriters and promoting their work through competition. This year they changed this up by pairing the 12 finalists with more established artists. I was particularly amazed at how perfect the selections were. The talents discovered both in songwriting and performance shows that there is a huge potential and hope for OPM. There was never any doubt of the prevalence of musical talent in our country. We just desperately need a good venue that channels this talent into something productive where we Filipinos can support and promote them.

Often, they would be songs that you would directly identify with the artists: Jose and Wally sang ASKAL by Ganny Brown, a very upbeat, humorous novelty song. Christian Bautista sang a very moving ballad composed by Marlon Barnuevo entitled ARAW, ULAP, LANGIT. Christian is cast as the Prince in Resort’s World Manila’s production of CINDERELLA coming this October.

Yael Yuzon interpreted SEGUNDO by Paul Armesin, which won the MERALCO Special Award which honors the entry that inspires nationalism. The fast rock song is very much like the material that comes from Yuzon’s band Spongecola. The same could be said for Raffy Calicdan’s SPACE which was interpreted by Kean Cipriano of Callalilly and another funky young performer in ANG BANDA NI KLEGGY.

Every finalist had THE perfect interpreter. As far as performances go it was Karylle’s heart-rending interpretation of SAYO NA LANG AKO by the young and talented Lara Maigue who just happens to be a sophomore at the UP Conservatory of Music. Karylle gave the most emotional live performance not just of the night but perhaps the whole year. SAYO NA LANG AKO reached the Top 5. Karylle shared that she was able to use the emotional state for her lead character of CINDERELLA to be shown in RW Manila. The song is about a woman who is not able to express her true feelings for the man she loves.

PHIL POP however is not a singing competition; it’s a songwriting competition. The overall message and music of Thyro Alfaro and Yumi Lacsamana’s DATI performed by Sam Concepcion, Tippy Dos Santos and rapper QUEST, won the hearts’ of the judges. DATI won the Grand prize of P1 million pesos, P500,000 for 1st Runner Up: KUNG DI MAN composed by Johnoy Danao performed by Ney Dimaculangan and P250,000 for 2nd Runner Up: PANSAMANTAGAL composed by Jungee Marcelo performed by Julianne Tarroja and Sitti Navarro.

It was a dramatic win for Thyro & Yumi who also reached the finals in the First Phil Pop Fest held last year. At first they were hesitant to have someone else interpret their work since they are primarily hip-hop performers as well. According to Thyro, “We initially wanted Gloc9 to do it but due to scheduling conflicts were not able to get him. When the name of QUEST the rapper came up, I realized he was an even better fit. And as you can see Sam and Tippy worked out for us too.”

For My Angel, My Beloved, My Passion, My Delicate Rose,

Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson): Are you glad to see me alone? Anna Karenina (Keira Knightley): This must stop. You make me feel as if I was guilty of something. Vronsky: What do you want me to do? Anna: I want you to go to Moscow and beg Kitty to forgive you. Vronsky: No that’s not what you want. Moscow? You can do better than that. Tonight I refused a posting to Tashkent. I can change my mind and you’ll never see me again. Anna: If you have any thought for me you will give me back my peace. Vronsky: I have no peace to give. There is no peace for us, in misery our greatest happiness.

There have been many adaptations of Leo Tolstoy’s novel put to screen, radio, TV, stage and even opera. Vivien Leigh was cast in 1948. Jacqueline Bisset and the late Christopher Reeve were in a TV movie version in 1985. Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean were in the 1997 version. The story of love, lust, scandal and societal judgment has fascinated audiences for decades. This version by director Joe Wright may be the most visually stunning among all of them. Recreating the grandeur of 19th century Russia was perhaps one of the big challenges in making the film. It has been nominated for 4 Oscars: Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design and Costume. The British Academy Film awards (BAFTA) has already given ANNA KARENINA the Best Costume award (Jacqueline Durran) while nominating it in similar categories and Most Outstanding British film as well.

The other categories that should’ve been added by award giving bodies were Best Direction and Best Editing. Wright was able to eloquently visualize the sensation of being in love especially in the extravagant ball scene.

Anna (Keira Knightley) couldn’t take her eyes off Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) but also did not want to be seen staring as she is already married to Karenin (Jude Law). She avoids his gaze turning away for a few seconds, when she looks back he’s gone. Suddenly she hears his voice behind her asking her to dance. The Waltz is hardly romantic with its formal movements, but the minimal physical contact and the person she was dancing with made it so thrilling. The hundreds of other pairs literally froze while Anna and the Count waltzed to the middle of the ballroom. Lights around them darkened and they were the only two people in the universe.

Wright masterfully used a theater stage as a metaphor for his character’s lives. All the world is a stage, in this sense shows that society will eventually know of or judge people in a particular scene.

Apart from Cinematography, Editing also enhanced the sets and detail that showed the decadence of Russian aristocracy. The camera would dolly into a scene with an elaborate golden wall divider in the background and cut where the background ends.  A servant would close a black door also with ornate golden relief ending a particular scene. Everything is so smooth and well thought out; sometimes you hardly notice the change in location or ‘transition’ until you’re already there.

ANNA KARENINA reveals much more than just the joy, pain and tragedies of love. While showing the decadence of the aristocracy it also deals with the disparity between classes and the prejudices that existed. There’s a personal evolution in the characters as the story goes along that people go through in real life.

The film illustrates how stratified and segregated Russian society was in the 19th century. It was a violation of decorum to have gypsies or any other race to stay in the same roof as an aristocrat. Kostya Levin’s (Domhnall Gleeson) brother Nikolai (David Wilmot) had kept an Indian woman, Masha (Tannishtha Chatterjee) as a companion who was taking care of him through his grave illness.

The young, blonde, princess-like Kitty (Alicia Vikander) went into Nikolai’s room to give him a sponge bath and saw the Indian companion. Kostya apologized to Kitty for having her there and insisted that she leave. Instead Kitty gave a towel to Masha and asked her to wash Nikolai together.

Kitty had always been in the bosom of wealth and decadence, that frame of mind. Because of her own loss and pain, it made her grow as a person and learn what was truly important in life. Kostya is himself a landowner who worked with farmers. He had found peace in a simpler life that made him ask, “Is it living simply that I’m looking for?”
