Very few composers/musicians will be able to say their work spans movies, theater and TV. Fewer still are those who can claim countless memorable soundtracks and hits in each medium. One such composer is Jesse Lucas who started off the TRIPLE THREATS Series at the CCP last August 20, 2015. This year they feature the composers: Jesse Lucas, Vincent De Jesus (September 24) and Rony Fortich (October 22).

AWIT NG HILING is from the musical JUNTO AL PASIG and KAYA KO is from SANDOSENANG SAPATOS. Both were produced by the Valenzuela City Center of the Performing Arts, which had some dancers and cast members who performed during the song. The band PILLOWCASE added a wider instrumental dimension while composer Jesse Lucas himself was on piano.

Liesl Batucan is one of the stars from REPERTORY PHILIPPINES. The versatile performer sang a heart rending I WILL LISTEN. The song was originally performed in BENILDE THE MUSICAL. Liesl describes the song, “This is one of Jesse’s earliest works for musical theater. I didn’t get to sing this song particular (originally). But you know what? I wish I had. It’s a beautiful tender song that a loving mother sings to her deaf and mute son. In the original run it was performed by a youngFaith Cuneta, with a very young cast. Together with, at that time, the very young Nyoy Volante. Tonight maybe a little maturity maybe mine, might just be what tis song needs.” Librettist in BENILDE THE MUSICAL is Ricky Gallardo and directed by Andre Tiangco.

In the official program Jesse Lucas wrote about his journey in producing the concert: “FULL RANGE has given me time to look back and be very grateful… Big big thank you to Mr. Ryan Cayabyab for the inspiration and the push, before, during and after the memorable years I spent in the U.P. College of Music. I am just one of many, many, many musicians songwriters, composers and musical artists in the industry whose lives have been touched by his music passion and generosity.”

Rather unexpectedly, especially in the beginning where Lear divides up his kingdom to his heirs, Bernardo has a booming voice befitting a king. He laughs heartily of man contented, in power relinquishing his authority to his children. Bernardo takes control of a role that also fits his stature, now at 70. His acting is not any less powerful than it was, perhaps even more so now than ever before.

The physicality of it all though makes one cringe. While there are no spectacular dance moves, there is the ‘wet’ scene where a tempest nearly drowns everyone in its path. AND it really does get wet on stage most especially for Haring Lear. Being in focus delivering lines, in the throes of madness and despair while water is endlessly splashing on your face is no mean feat. He more than delivers, his performance takes you to a dark place you wish you’d never have to visit.

This is the acting we know from Bernardo Bernardo who was part of Ishmael Bernal’s City After Dark. Although the majority of Filipinos have come to know him as Steve Carpio in HOME ALONG DA RILES with Comedy King the late Dolphy. Recently Bernardo was also in the Cinemalaya film RONDA starring Ai Ai Delas Alas.

Bernardo is a true performer. He had an allergic reaction to the wrong make up applied on opening night to the point of being hospitalized. In spite of this he was able to get back on stage the next night.

This particular play adapted by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera had lead Teroy Guzman in PETA’s previous run last 2012. Even then it was well received by critics. So Bernardo being able to put his own stamp on it is even more remarkable.

Another veteran actor is Garry Lim as Gloster, the ever-faithful nobleman of Haring Lear. Garry Lim was also part of the previous cast as Regan. Lim is the most tortured in a tragic cast of characters. Lim is able to give this role a sense of patience and fortitude in the face of the most difficult circumstances. Filipino words and lines roll off his tongue eloquently. Lim has also had a great number of Cinemalaya films- APARISYON, REQUIEME and AMOK roles on TV and commercial projects as well: MY LITTLE BOSSINGS, SI AGIMAT SI ENTENG KABISOTE AT SI AKO.

The sisters and heirs to Lear are the ones that give the color of blood in this grey end of the world scenario. Buddy Camarat is Goneril the eldest strung out in heroin. She is the most whimsical of the cast having a singsong delivery to her lines. Buddy inhabits this female role quite easily, just like her onstage sister George De Jesus III who plays Regan. Both of them have come back to reprise their previous roles. While Buddy’s attack is more sensual and avaricious, George has that female touch of violence. These two ‘evil’ sisters aren’t antagonistic per se; they only hatch their treachery in order to extend control and power. In that sense we meet people like Goneril and Regan every day.

Abner Delina Jr who has also repeated his role from 2012 plays the youngest sister Cordelia. Here she is more a victim among the viciousness of her sisters. The more interesting side role for Abner is Lakayo, the court jester. For this version of HARING LEAR there is this puppet that has a demented look. Abner switches from using his own face, which has in turn a mask behind his head. There’s a real schizoid quality in Lakayo alone switching from the puppet to his ‘real’ face.

Edgardo played by the hefty Nico Dans must have been very challenging to play as his character goes through insanity and back again. His is certainly the most physical. In one scene he literally falls off stage simulating a fall off a hill. Audiences could hear a solid thud from his wide body’s landing.

Roi Calilong is the servant Oswaldo but his non-speaking role as Death is even more interesting. In this post apocalyptic world, Death is only wearing speedos underneath a black cape and gyrates like Channing Tatum in MAGIC MIKE.

Rhenwyn Gabalonzo as Edmundo is the most scheming and treacherous character here. Jess Evardone a veteran of independent films has even more multiple roles here as Tagapaglingkod, Matandang lalaki, Duktor ni Cordelia and Eraldo. Evardone is able to inhabit each role with sincerity and believability as he has done countless times before.

Every single actor and cast member has done a fantastic job, a true ensemble piece: Lambert De Jesus (Kent), Roi Calilong (Oswaldo), Renante Bustamante (Duke Ng Albanya), Jason Barcial (Duke Ng Burgonia), Jeff Hernandez (Duke Ng Cornualles) and McDonnel Bolaños (Hari Ng Francia). Inevitably we come back to the leader, Bernardo Bernardo, commandeering the powerful but heartrending figure of Lear as his own.

From a shuttle, Spock (Zachary Quinto) is lowered into the heart of a volcano. His mission is to stop the imminent eruption and save all life on a very distant Class M planet. Suddenly an earthquake, smoke rattles their craft and snaps the cable lowering Spock. Although the suit can protect him from heat, falling directly into the burning lava is certain death.

Captain Kirk (Chris Pine): We need to beam Spock back to this ship we have one way to do it. Chekov (Anton Yelchin): Maybe if we had a direct line of sight. Scotty (Simon Pegg): You’re talking about an active volcano sir… I can’t guarantee we can stand the heat. Spock: Our shuttle was concealed by the ash cloud but the enterprise is too large. Utilized in the rescue effort it would be revealed to the indigenous species. Kirk: Spock no one knows the rules more than you but there has got to be an exception. Spock: Such action violates the prime directive. Bones: Shut up Spock! We’re trying to save you damn it! Spock: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Kirk: We’re talking about your life! Spock: The rule cannot be broken. Chekov: 90 seconds before detonation. Kirk:(whispers to himself) Spock if you were the one here what would you do? Bones (Karl Urban): He’d let you die.

If there was one film that should be seen in 3D Star Trek Into Darkness should be it. While space travel is unaffordable and travelling faster than the speed of light is still impossible, watching it in 3D is the next best thing. For this you cannot settle on cinemas pretending to give 3D. You have to go to the real thing at Newport Cinemas in Resort’s World Manila, EASTWOOD City Mall, Lucky China Town Mall and Shang Rila Plaza mall with its new EAST Wing, which will also have new cinemas. Make sure to hold on, every time Kirk asks Scotty to go into warp you’re travelling faster than the speed of light.

One of the main distinctions from Star Wars franchise is that Star Trek is based more on science fiction theory. Two of the most successful science fiction franchises are often compared. While Star Wars is from a galaxy far away, Star Trek is based on the future of our planet, humanity if and when we DO get our acts together and develop intergalactic travel etc. What would happen then politically, what would our relationship be with other alien races etc ? Creator Gene Roddenberry created a fascinating universe with charismatic characters, that to this day captures audiences.

In the action sequence mentioned above, Spock mentions the prime directive. In the Star Trek definition (from Wikipedia): “Starfleet’s General Order number 1, is the most prominent guiding principle of the United Federation of Planets. The Prime Directive dictates that there can be no interference with the internal development of alien civilizations. It has special implications, however, for civilizations that have not yet developed the technology for interstellar spaceflight (“pre-warp”), since no primitive culture can be given or exposed to any information regarding advanced technology or the existence of extraplanetary civilizations, lest this exposure alter the natural development of the civilization.”

On current TV shows, the theory of earlier cultures being exposed to alien technology is on ANCIENT ALIENS series on History channel. Nearly all ancient cultures through out history from the Egyptians, Indians, Babylonians and even Jewish texts mention people or god-like creatures on air born crafts as a matter of fact.

The History channel also aired HAWKING (in Asia), which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Hawking. Cumberbatch plays the genetically engineered villain Kahn in this movie. Incidentally, when (the real) Stephen Hawking guest starred on the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV episode “Descent”, he was taken on a guided tour of the set. Pausing in front of the warp core set piece, he remarked, “I’m working on that.”

Cumberbatch is more known as the modern version of the most famous detective in “Sherlock” TV series and is also part of The Hobbit films as The Necromancer. Even when talking to Kirk (Chris Pine) Cumberbatch seems to be ‘talking down’ to him, very similar in the way he rattles off facts to Watson. Peter Weller cast as Admiral Marcus is also very much familiar to sci-fi fans as ROBOCOP.

With both recent Star Trek films there’s more of the 23rd century to be designed and seen compared with older versions. Star trek has benefitted from improved CGI. When Kirk says he needs thrusters, we actually see thrusters coming out of the Enterprise trying to stay in position fighting off the Earth’s gravitational pull.

Intergalactic communication is possible with Scotty holding what looks like a cell phone (literally unli calls and unli distance). As opposed to Kirk just tapping their insignias on their uniform to communicate in past versions. An exciting fight scene ensues between Spock and Kahn on a flying car going through the city. Another unforgettable scene is when Kirk and Kahn try to get on another ship USS Vengeance old school, without the benefit of the transporter room. They jettison themselves in suits and have a latch open in other ship. They fly through space filled with debris that can not only block their way but kill them. Smaller particles hit Kirk’s faceplate, endangering him through the process.

While it’s easy to just enjoy the action and effects, there are quite a few political statements. There’s a strong reference to 911 near the end of the film. They chose to have the terrorists not from an outside force but from someone within. Science, politics, war, the military they all come together. Star Trek is more than just fiction, but what could be. Just like the ancients exposed to technology, we shape our own future with what we see and think of today.

Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson): Are you glad to see me alone? Anna Karenina (Keira Knightley): This must stop. You make me feel as if I was guilty of something. Vronsky: What do you want me to do? Anna: I want you to go to Moscow and beg Kitty to forgive you. Vronsky: No that’s not what you want. Moscow? You can do better than that. Tonight I refused a posting to Tashkent. I can change my mind and you’ll never see me again. Anna: If you have any thought for me you will give me back my peace. Vronsky: I have no peace to give. There is no peace for us, in misery our greatest happiness.

There have been many adaptations of Leo Tolstoy’s novel put to screen, radio, TV, stage and even opera. Vivien Leigh was cast in 1948. Jacqueline Bisset and the late Christopher Reeve were in a TV movie version in 1985. Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean were in the 1997 version. The story of love, lust, scandal and societal judgment has fascinated audiences for decades. This version by director Joe Wright may be the most visually stunning among all of them. Recreating the grandeur of 19th century Russia was perhaps one of the big challenges in making the film. It has been nominated for 4 Oscars: Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design and Costume. The British Academy Film awards (BAFTA) has already given ANNA KARENINA the Best Costume award (Jacqueline Durran) while nominating it in similar categories and Most Outstanding British film as well.

The other categories that should’ve been added by award giving bodies were Best Direction and Best Editing. Wright was able to eloquently visualize the sensation of being in love especially in the extravagant ball scene.

Anna (Keira Knightley) couldn’t take her eyes off Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) but also did not want to be seen staring as she is already married to Karenin (Jude Law). She avoids his gaze turning away for a few seconds, when she looks back he’s gone. Suddenly she hears his voice behind her asking her to dance. The Waltz is hardly romantic with its formal movements, but the minimal physical contact and the person she was dancing with made it so thrilling. The hundreds of other pairs literally froze while Anna and the Count waltzed to the middle of the ballroom. Lights around them darkened and they were the only two people in the universe.

Wright masterfully used a theater stage as a metaphor for his character’s lives. All the world is a stage, in this sense shows that society will eventually know of or judge people in a particular scene.

Apart from Cinematography, Editing also enhanced the sets and detail that showed the decadence of Russian aristocracy. The camera would dolly into a scene with an elaborate golden wall divider in the background and cut where the background ends.  A servant would close a black door also with ornate golden relief ending a particular scene. Everything is so smooth and well thought out; sometimes you hardly notice the change in location or ‘transition’ until you’re already there.

ANNA KARENINA reveals much more than just the joy, pain and tragedies of love. While showing the decadence of the aristocracy it also deals with the disparity between classes and the prejudices that existed. There’s a personal evolution in the characters as the story goes along that people go through in real life.

The film illustrates how stratified and segregated Russian society was in the 19th century. It was a violation of decorum to have gypsies or any other race to stay in the same roof as an aristocrat. Kostya Levin’s (Domhnall Gleeson) brother Nikolai (David Wilmot) had kept an Indian woman, Masha (Tannishtha Chatterjee) as a companion who was taking care of him through his grave illness.

The young, blonde, princess-like Kitty (Alicia Vikander) went into Nikolai’s room to give him a sponge bath and saw the Indian companion. Kostya apologized to Kitty for having her there and insisted that she leave. Instead Kitty gave a towel to Masha and asked her to wash Nikolai together.

Kitty had always been in the bosom of wealth and decadence, that frame of mind. Because of her own loss and pain, it made her grow as a person and learn what was truly important in life. Kostya is himself a landowner who worked with farmers. He had found peace in a simpler life that made him ask, “Is it living simply that I’m looking for?”
